# How to find the sites AI cites for your competitors, not you

> When an AI assistant recommends a rival, it usually shows where it looked. Here is how a small business can log those sources by hand, find the sites that cite rivals but not you, decide which ones matter, and close them month by month.

Updated October 7, 2026 · AI Syndicate team · https://www.aisyndicate.com/blog/ai-source-gap-analysis/

**Quick answer:** Pick 10 to 20 real customer questions. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI answers, Copilot and Claude. Write down every business named and every source cited. A site cited next to rivals but never next to you is a **source gap**. Sort gaps into get listed, get reviewed, get mentioned, or publish the page. Repeat monthly.

**Our take:** Close the boring gaps first: the listing, the review profile, the missing page. A gap list tempts owners to chase the most famous site on it. We'd start with the sources more than one engine cites that you can fix this month, because those are in your own hands. The links engines show keep shifting, so finished small fixes beat a wish list of big names.

## What are the key facts about finding the sources AI cites for competitors?

Checked on 7 October 2026, from each company's own help or developer pages.

| Engine or rule | What the company says | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Perplexity | "Each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources" | Perplexity Help Center |
| ChatGPT | Answers that use web search "may include citations"; a **Sources** button shows cited sources and other relevant links | OpenAI Help Center |
| ChatGPT placement | "Placement is not guaranteed." Sites must let OAI-SearchBot crawl them to be eligible | OpenAI Help Center |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | They show links to pages, and "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary" | Google Search Central |
| Gemini app | A **Sources** button appears at the bottom or in-line, but "Not all responses include related links or sources" | Gemini Apps Help |
| Microsoft Copilot | Fetches information from "the Bing search service"; in Copilot Chat the citation section also shows the exact search queries sent to Bing | Microsoft Learn |
| Claude | With web search on, "Every response includes citations" | Claude Help Center |
| Reviews | The FTC's final rule (14 Aug 2024) bans fake reviews and paying for reviews that express a particular sentiment | Federal Trade Commission |

## What is an AI source gap?

An AI source gap is a website that AI engines cite when they recommend your competitors, but never when they mention you. It might be a review site, a local directory, a "best of" list, a Reddit thread, a news story or a rival's own pricing page.

A **citation** is the link an AI answer shows to back up what it said. Our glossary explains [what an AI citation is](/glossary/ai-citation/) in more detail.

The gap matters because those links show you where the engine looked. If an engine names three rivals and links to a site you aren't on, that site may be part of the reason you were left out. This is our reading of how the answers are built, not a rule any company publishes.

## Why does each AI engine show its sources differently?

Because each one is built on a different search system and a different screen design. Here is only what each company documents about how it shows sources.

- **Perplexity.** Perplexity says it searches the web in real time and that each answer has numbered citations linking to the original sources. [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work) These are the easiest to copy down.
- **ChatGPT.** ChatGPT "may search the web automatically" when a question needs current information, and you can also turn on Search by hand. Answers that search may include citations, and a **Sources** button lists cited sources and other relevant links. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search)
- **Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.** Google describes AI Overviews as a snapshot "with key information and links to dig deeper." [Google](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/14901683) Google also says the two features may use different models, so the links they show will vary. Check both. [Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)
- **Gemini.** In the Gemini app, sources sit behind a **Sources** button or in-line. Google says that if the button is missing, Gemini didn't give links for that answer. [Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/14143489) Record that as "no sources", not as a gap.
- **Microsoft Copilot.** Copilot sends a short search query to Bing and builds its answer from the results. In Copilot Chat, the citation section also shows the exact queries it sent to Bing. [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/copilot/microsoft-365/manage-public-web-access) Write those down too. They tell you which searches you need to show up in.
- **Claude.** Anthropic says that when web search is on, Claude's answers include direct citations, source links and, when useful, relevant quotes. [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enabling-and-using-web-search)

For which search index sits behind each engine, see [Where do AI engines get their information?](/blog/where-ai-engines-get-their-sources/) We check every engine, not just Google, because a site can be cited in one and missing from the next.

## How do I pick the questions and run them?

Pick 10 to 20 questions your customers really ask, then ask each one in every engine, the same way each time. This is our advice.

1. **Use real wording.** Copy questions from customer emails, calls and reviews. Mix in "best [service] in [city]", problem questions and price questions. Our guide on [how to choose prompts to track](/blog/how-to-choose-prompts-to-track/) covers this step in depth.
2. **Leave your name out of most of them.** A source gap shows up when a buyer doesn't know you yet. Questions that name you show something else: what AI says about you.
3. **Put your city in the question.** ChatGPT may guess your location from your internet connection and may use saved memories when it rewrites your question into a search. OpenAI's own tip for local results is to include your city, neighborhood or postal code. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search)
4. **Start a new chat for each question.** Our advice, so earlier questions don't steer the answer.
5. **Ask every engine.** At minimum: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google (AI Overviews and AI Mode), Copilot and Claude. If an engine answers without searching, ask again with search turned on.
6. **Save a screenshot of each answer.** You will want it next month.

## What should I write down for each answer?

Write one row per answer: the question, the engine, every business named, and every source it cited. Keep sources as domain names, like `reviewsite.example`, so you can count them later. This is our advice.

> **This example is made up.** Example Plumbing, Sample Pipe Co and Placeholder Plumbing are invented businesses in an invented town, and the `.example` domains are placeholders. Your own sheet will hold the real names and links you see.

| Question | Engine | Businesses named | Sources cited | You named? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Best plumber in Springfield | Perplexity | Sample Pipe Co, Placeholder Plumbing | reviewsite.example (review site), citymag.example (best-of list), samplepipe.example (rival) | No |
| Best plumber in Springfield | ChatGPT | Sample Pipe Co | reviewsite.example (review site), forum.example (forum) | No |
| Same-day water heater repair in Springfield? | Google AI Mode | Placeholder Plumbing, Example Plumbing | localdirectory.example (directory), exampleplumbing.example (you) | Yes |
| New water heater cost in Springfield? | Claude | Sample Pipe Co | samplepipe.example/pricing (rival) | No |
| Best plumber in Springfield | Gemini | Sample Pipe Co | None shown (no Sources button) | No |

Tag each source with one of these types, in brackets after the domain, so the next step is easy:

- **Review site** (Google, Yelp or your trade's review site)
- **Directory** (local, trade body or chamber of commerce listings)
- **Best-of list** ("top 10 plumbers in town" articles)
- **Forum** (Reddit, local groups, Q&A sites)
- **News or magazine**
- **Video** (YouTube)
- **Reference** (Wikipedia and similar)
- **Rival's own site** and **your own site**

## How do I turn my notes into a list of gaps?

Count how often each domain was cited in an answer that named a rival but not you. That count is your gap list. This is our advice.

Make a second table with one row per domain:

| Domain (made up) | Type | Times cited (rival named, not you) | Engines citing it | Also cited next to you? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| reviewsite.example | Review site | 9 | Perplexity, ChatGPT, Copilot | No |
| citymag.example | Best-of list | 6 | Perplexity, Google AI Mode | No |
| samplepipe.example/pricing | Rival's own page | 4 | Claude, ChatGPT | No |
| forum.example | Forum | 3 | ChatGPT | No |
| localdirectory.example | Directory | 2 | Google AI Mode | Yes |

The illustration's numbers are invented to show the method.

Read it like this. A domain that is never cited when you are named, but often cited when rivals are, is a true gap. A domain that also shows up next to you, like the directory above, is not a gap. You're already there.

Also count the businesses. If one rival is named in most answers, open the sources next to that rival first. Those links are the clearest picture of what the engines trust in your market. Counting names this way is close to what people call [AI share of voice](/glossary/ai-share-of-voice/).

## Which gaps matter most?

The gaps that matter are cited often, by more than one engine, on sites your buyers read, that you can realistically reach. This is our advice. Score each gap from 0 to 2 on three tests:

| Test | 0 | 1 | 2 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Spread:** how many engines cite it? | One engine, once | One engine, often | Two or more engines |
| **Fit:** do your buyers use it? | Wrong audience or region | Somewhat related | Exactly your buyers and area |
| **Reach:** can you act on it this month? | Out of your hands | Takes months | You can start this week |

Work the 5s and 6s first. A gap cited by only one engine can still matter, but engines change the links they show. Google says outright that the links in AI Mode and AI Overviews "will vary." [Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) A source that turns up across engines is less likely to be a one-day fluke.

Be honest on Reach. A big national newspaper might score 2 on Spread and 0 on Reach. Note it, and move on to what you can change.

## What do I do about each kind of gap?

Sort every gap into one of four jobs: get listed, get reviewed, get mentioned, or publish the page that answers it. This is our advice.

### Get listed
For directories, trade bodies and map listings. Claim the profile, fill in every field, and use the same name, address and phone number everywhere. Start with your Google Business Profile. Our guide to [Google Business Profile for AI search](/blog/google-business-profile-for-ai-search/) has the checklist.

### Get reviewed
For review sites. Ask real customers to review you on the site the engines cited, not just the one you prefer. Don't buy, fake or filter reviews. The FTC's 2024 rule bans fake reviews and bans paying for reviews that express a particular opinion. [FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/federal-trade-commission-announces-final-rule-banning-fake-reviews-testimonials) More in [Do reviews affect AI recommendations?](/blog/do-reviews-affect-ai-recommendations/)

### Get mentioned
For best-of lists, local news, forums, video and reference sites. These are earned. Send list writers and reporters facts they can check. Answer questions on Reddit openly as the business. Post short, captioned videos. See our guides on ["best of" lists](/blog/do-best-of-lists-help-ai-recommendations/), [Reddit](/blog/reddit-and-ai-answers/), [videos](/blog/how-to-get-your-videos-cited-by-ai/) and [Wikipedia](/blog/wikipedia-and-ai-answers/).

### Publish the page that answers it
For when a rival's own page gets cited, like a price guide or a service-area page. That usually means the rival answered a question you haven't. Write your own honest page that answers it, with real numbers where you can. Then make sure engines can read it. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. [Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) OpenAI says sites must allow OAI-SearchBot. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search) Our guide to [which AI crawlers to allow](/blog/ai-crawlers-robots-txt/) covers the rest.

## How often should I redo a source gap check, and can I pay to skip it?

Redo it monthly, and no, you can't pay your way into citations. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search "is not guaranteed," and that results and citations "can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect." [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search) Google says there are "no additional requirements" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal Search eligibility. [Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) Be wary of anyone who sells a guaranteed citation.

Our advice on timing:

- **Monthly** for most small businesses. Same questions, same wording, same engines.
- **Compare against last month.** Which gaps closed? Which new domains appeared?
- **Don't react to one answer.** Answers move from day to day. Our guide on [why AI answers change](/blog/why-ai-answers-change/) explains why.

Doing this by hand gets slow. Our [Prompt Simulator](/prompt-simulator/) runs one question across 12 engines at once and shows the sources each one cites. AI Syndicate's [Competitors](/competitors/) board, included on every plan, measures share of voice from real AI answers for up to 25 rivals, and lists the buyer questions where a rival gets cited and you don't.

## FAQ

### What is a source gap in AI search?

A source gap is a website that AI engines cite when they recommend your competitors but not when they mention you, such as a review site, a directory, a "best of" list, a forum thread or a rival's own page. Finding these shows you where the engines look in your market.

### Which AI engines should I check for source gaps?

Check every engine your customers might use: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot and Claude. They show sources differently and use different search systems. Google says even its own AI Mode and AI Overviews can show different links. [Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)

### How many questions do I need for a source gap check?

Our advice is 10 to 20 real customer questions, mostly without your business name, each asked in every engine with the same wording. That gives enough answers to see which sites keep coming up without taking more than an afternoon.

### Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

None of the companies document a way to. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed and that sites must allow OAI-SearchBot to be eligible. Citations are earned through listings, honest reviews, mentions and pages that answer the question. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search)

### What if AI cites my competitor's own website?

That usually means the rival published a page answering a question you haven't, like prices or service areas. Our advice is to publish your own honest page answering it, and make sure search crawlers can read it.
