# Can you pay to show up in AI answers?

> Ads have arrived in AI answers. ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Amazon's shopping assistant all sell them now. So can you simply pay to be the business the AI recommends? Here is what each company says it sells, what it promises about the answer itself, and how a small business should decide whether to try it, as of November 3, 2026.

Updated November 3, 2026 · AI Syndicate team · https://www.aisyndicate.com/blog/can-you-pay-to-show-up-in-ai-answers/

**Quick answer:** Yes, for a labelled ad, on some engines. ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Amazon's shopping assistant all sell **sponsored placements** beside or inside the answer. Claude has **no ads**, and Perplexity has been phasing its ads out. What money does not buy is a **citation in the answer itself**: Google says "Buying ads doesn't influence organic AI answers," and OpenAI and Perplexity made the same promise.

**Our take:** Treat AI ads as rented shelf space next to the answer. The answer itself still has to be earned. Google, OpenAI and Perplexity each said paid slots sit apart from the answer and cannot steer it, and Google states plainly that ads do not change who gets cited. Claude sells nothing at all, paid ChatGPT plans carry no ads, and Google's in-answer ads cover about a dozen English-speaking countries. So an ad budget reaches a slice of the audience, only while it runs. A page the engines cite reaches every surface, and keeps working after the money stops.

## Can you pay to show up in ChatGPT?

Yes. ChatGPT now shows paid ads, but they sit below the answer, not inside it. One note first: OpenAI's own ad pages would not load for our reader on November 3, 2026, so the details below come from news reports of what OpenAI announced, plus OpenAI's crawler page, which did load.

**When it started.** OpenAI announced the plan on January 16, 2026. eWeek reported that OpenAI would "place ads at the bottom of responses only when a relevant product or service is connected to the conversation," and that ads would not appear "inside the text of a response." [eWeek](https://www.eweek.com/news/openai-tests-chatgpt-ads/) The live test began February 9, 2026, for "logged-in adult users in the U.S." on the Free and Go plans. [Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/openai-begins-testing-ads-in-chatgpt-for-free-and-go-users/566869/)

**Who sees them.** Free and Go users. "Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers won't see ads." OpenAI also said it "won't serve them to accounts identified as under 18" and "won't show ads in conversations about health, mental health, or politics." [Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/openai-begins-testing-ads-in-chatgpt-for-free-and-go-users/566869/)

**How they look.** Ads are "labeled as sponsored" and appear "at the bottom of ChatGPT responses." [Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/openai-begins-testing-ads-in-chatgpt-for-free-and-go-users/566869/) eWeek reported each ad carries a label, "an explanation of why it appeared," and options to dismiss it. [eWeek](https://www.eweek.com/news/openai-tests-chatgpt-ads/)

**What OpenAI promised about answers.** NBC News reported that Sam Altman said OpenAI would "not accept money to influence the answer" ChatGPT gives, and that ads would be "visually separated" from the answers. [NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/internet/openai-starts-testing-ads-chatgpt-rcna258242)

**How a business gets in.** On May 5, 2026, OpenAI opened a beta self-serve Ads Manager. "U.S. advertisers can now register for access, upload ads, manage budgets, control pacing," with both cost-per-click and cost-per-thousand-views bidding. [Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/openai-launches-self-serve-ads-manager-for-chatgpt/573971/) On October 21, 2026, Reuters reported ChatGPT ads had expanded to 26 more countries, "bringing the total to 89," and that advertisers can buy "through technology partners, or get self-service access via Ads Manager." [Reuters](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/10/21/openai-expands-chatgpt-ads-to-26-more-countries-in-bid-to-boost-revenue) We could not confirm current minimum spends from a page we could open, so we give none.

**The ad robot.** When you submit an ad, OpenAI checks the landing page with its own crawler. OpenAI says "OAI-AdsBot is used to validate the safety of web pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT," that it "only visits pages submitted as ads," and that its data "is not used to train generative AI foundation models." [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) That is a separate, labelled product. It has nothing to do with whether ChatGPT's answer cites you, which is what our guide to [ChatGPT ranking factors](/blog/chatgpt-ranking-factors/) covers.

## Can you buy ads in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Yes, in a dozen countries, in English. Google's Ads help page says "ads can appear directly within or alongside these AI-generated responses," and that they are "clearly labeled" as Sponsored and "visually distinguished from organic content." [Google](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775?hl=en)

**Where.** Ordinary ads above or below an AI Overview run in "All 200+ countries and territories, and all languages, where AI Overviews are available." Ads *inside* AI Overviews and AI Mode are narrower. Google lists English only, in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia (AI Overviews only), Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan (text ads only), the Philippines and Singapore, and says the list may not be complete. [Google](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775?hl=en)

**What's new.** On October 28, 2026, Google said it was bringing ads in AI Mode to ten more countries and launching "multiturn ads in the U.S." so ads can show on follow-up questions. It added: "In Q4 2026, we plan to expand to additional locales, including Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom." [Google](https://blog.google/products/ads-commerce/ads-in-ai-mode-global/)

**How you get in.** You don't apply. "Existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible." Exact and phrase match keywords only qualify "when a user's query expresses direct commercial intent." To show on broader questions, Google points to AI Max for Search, broad match, Shopping and Performance Max. You also "can't target ads exclusively to AI Overviews or AI Mode, or opt out of showing ads in them separately from Search." [Google](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775?hl=en)

**What about the Gemini app?** Different product. In December 2025 Google's ads chief said "there are no ads in the Gemini app and there are no current plans to change that." [9to5Google](https://9to5google.com/2025/12/08/google-gemini-no-ads/) By April 2026, Google's chief business officer said an ad format that works in AI Mode "would transfer successfully to Gemini app." [Let's Data Science](https://letsdatascience.com/news/google-executive-signals-ads-could-reach-gemini-433f7132) We found no Google announcement of Gemini app ads as of November 3, 2026, so treat any claim that you can buy them as **unconfirmed**.

## Does Microsoft Copilot show ads?

Yes. Microsoft's Advertising help page says "Microsoft Advertising serves ads in varying formats which are displayed in Copilot's responses." [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/advertising/msa-help/hlp_ba_conc_adsforcopilot)

**You are probably in already.** "All eligible campaign and ad types are automatically opted in to serving in Copilot. Advertisers cannot opt out of serving ads, and there's no guarantee that their ads will be displayed in Copilot." Ads are built automatically from your campaign's existing text and images. [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/advertising/msa-help/hlp_ba_conc_adsforcopilot)

**Which ads qualify.** Microsoft lists Multimedia ads, Product ads (from Shopping and Performance Max), Search ads that carry a logo, and two travel formats: Property promotion ads and Tours and Activities ads. It adds: "Search ads must include a logo to be eligible to show in Copilot," and calls Performance Max "the best way to increase exposure on Copilot." [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/advertising/msa-help/hlp_ba_conc_adsforcopilot)

**How ads are picked.** Microsoft says it considers "the context of the entire conversation, not only the last prompt." Your negative keywords still apply, and ads are not shown in conversations its systems flag as harmful. [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/advertising/msa-help/hlp_ba_conc_adsforcopilot)

**What you can't see.** "Microsoft Advertising does not currently support specific metrics for ads served in Copilot." [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/advertising/msa-help/hlp_ba_conc_adsforcopilot) So you can't pull a clean Copilot-only report.

**Two gaps.** Unlike Google, this page does not say how Copilot ads are labelled, and it does not say that ads leave Copilot's answer untouched. Both are **unconfirmed** by Microsoft on the page we read (last updated September 2, 2026). The organic route into Copilot runs through Bing, which our [Microsoft Copilot visibility guide](/blog/microsoft-copilot-visibility/) explains.

## Can you pay to show up in Perplexity, Amazon's assistant or Claude?

Perplexity: not now. Amazon's shopping assistant: yes. Claude: no.

**Perplexity.** Perplexity launched ads on November 12, 2024, as "sponsored follow-up questions and paid media positioned to the side of an answer," in the U.S. first, with ads "clearly noted as" sponsored. It promised "the content of the answers you receive on Perplexity will not be influenced by advertisers." [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/why-we-re-experimenting-with-advertising) In February 2026, the Financial Times reported that Perplexity had begun phasing out ads at the end of 2025, with executives saying "A user has to believe this is the best possible answer." [TechCentral](https://www.techcentral.ie/perplexity-temporarily-halts-ads-over-concerns-about-user-trust/) ITdaily reported the company had been removing advertising "across all its products." [ITdaily](https://itdaily.com/news/innovation/ai-startup-perplexity-phases-out-ads-once-again) We found no report of Perplexity ads returning as of November 3, 2026. Perplexity has not ruled it out.

**Amazon (Rufus, now part of Alexa for Shopping).** Amazon Ads says Rufus and Alexa+ were combined into Alexa for Shopping, and that "Existing sponsored ads campaigns are automatically eligible to serve in Alexa for Shopping." [Amazon Ads](https://advertising.amazon.com/library/news/agentic-shopping-advertising) The newer format is Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands **prompts**: short AI-written ad messages that "can appear in shopping results and product detail pages," and may open a dialog in Rufus when clicked. They reached general availability in the U.S. on March 25, 2026, billed per click, for "U.S. Amazon advertisers using Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands campaigns (excluding authors and publishers)." Campaigns are "automatically enrolled," and you can pause any prompt in the Ads Console. [Amazon Ads](https://advertising.amazon.com/resources/whats-new/unboxed-2025-sponsored-products-and-sponsored-brands-prompts) Neither Amazon page says how prompts are labelled. Our [Amazon Rufus guide](/blog/how-to-show-up-in-amazon-rufus/) covers the unpaid side.

**Claude.** No ads, and none for sale. On February 4, 2026, Anthropic wrote: "Claude will remain ad-free." Users won't see sponsored links next to their chats, "nor will Claude's responses be influenced by advertisers." Anthropic said it will support shopping that the user starts, and that "Should we need to revisit this approach, we'll be transparent about our reasons for doing so." [Anthropic](https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-is-a-space-to-think) The only way into a Claude answer is to be a source it finds and trusts.

## What does paying for AI ads not buy?

A citation. Every company that published a rule on this says the paid slot and the answer are kept apart.

- **Google** is the most direct. "Paid advertising does not influence the organic responses generated by Google AI." Organic answers "are generated independently using Google's Search quality and ranking systems," and "whether your site is cited organically doesn't affect your ad auction eligibility." [Google](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775?hl=en)
- **OpenAI.** Altman said OpenAI would "not accept money to influence the answer." [NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/internet/openai-starts-testing-ads-chatgpt-rcna258242) Ads sit "at the bottom of ChatGPT responses." [Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/openai-begins-testing-ads-in-chatgpt-for-free-and-go-users/566869/)
- **Perplexity** said answers "will not be influenced by advertisers," and that held even for the sponsored questions it ran. [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/why-we-re-experimenting-with-advertising)
- **Anthropic** goes further: no ads at all. [Anthropic](https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-is-a-space-to-think)
- **Microsoft's** Copilot ad page makes no statement either way, so for Copilot this is **unconfirmed**. [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/advertising/msa-help/hlp_ba_conc_adsforcopilot)

> **In plain words:** an ad buys a labelled box next to the answer, for as long as you pay. It does not put your name in the sentence the AI writes, and it does not add your page to the list of sources underneath.

That matters because the two look different to a customer. A sponsored box is marked as an ad. A citation is the AI saying "here is where I got this." Paying for one does not get you the other, in either direction: Google says your citations don't help your ad auction, and your ads don't help your citations.

## Why do organic AI citations still matter if ads exist?

Because ads only reach part of the audience, only while you pay, and you get thin reporting on them. Citations have none of those limits.

**Ads miss a lot of people.** ChatGPT shows no ads on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education plans, to under-18 accounts, or in health, mental health and political conversations. [Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/openai-begins-testing-ads-in-chatgpt-for-free-and-go-users/566869/) Google's in-answer ads are English-only in about a dozen countries. [Google](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775?hl=en) Claude has no ads. [Anthropic](https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-is-a-space-to-think) Perplexity is phasing them out. [TechCentral](https://www.techcentral.ie/perplexity-temporarily-halts-ads-over-concerns-about-user-trust/) A cited page can show up on all of those surfaces. An ad can't.

**Ads stop when the budget stops.** **Our advice, not a vendor statement:** treat AI ads like any other paid search. Useful for a launch, a season or a test, but not a replacement for being the source the AI trusts.

**Reporting is thin.** Google says ad performance in AI Overviews and AI Mode is "included in aggregate" with your normal Search numbers. [Google](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775?hl=en) Microsoft "does not currently support specific metrics" for Copilot ads. [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/advertising/msa-help/hlp_ba_conc_adsforcopilot) So you often can't tell what the AI placement alone did.

**Ads can be eligible without your choosing.** Google and Microsoft both enroll existing campaigns automatically and don't let you opt out of AI placements separately. [Google](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775?hl=en) [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/advertising/msa-help/hlp_ba_conc_adsforcopilot) Amazon does the same with prompts. [Amazon Ads](https://advertising.amazon.com/resources/whats-new/unboxed-2025-sponsored-products-and-sponsored-brands-prompts) If you already run search or Amazon ads, check where they are showing before you add budget.

To see where you stand organically, run our free [AI visibility check](/#tool), then ask your customers' real questions in the [Prompt Simulator](/prompt-simulator/) and look at which sources each AI cites.

## Should a small business try AI ads? A checklist

| Check | Done when | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The surface sells ads where you are | You have matched your country and language to the lists: ChatGPT (89 countries), Google in-answer ads (English, 12 countries) | Reuters; Google |
| Your customers would see ads | They are likely on free ChatGPT, Google Search or Copilot, not paid ChatGPT plans or Claude | Search Engine Journal; Anthropic |
| Your topic is allowed | Not health, mental health or politics on ChatGPT; restricted categories carry disclaimers on Copilot | Search Engine Journal; Microsoft |
| You know what you already run | You have checked whether existing Google, Microsoft or Amazon campaigns are already eligible for AI placements | Google; Microsoft; Amazon Ads |
| Google campaign fits AI questions | Broad match, AI Max, Shopping or Performance Max is on if you want ads on exploratory questions | Google |
| Microsoft Search ads have a logo | A logo extension or automated business logo is attached | Microsoft |
| Negative keywords are current | Your negative list blocks searches you never want to pay for; Microsoft applies it in Copilot | Microsoft |
| The ad landing page can be checked | Your firewall or bot rules do not block OAI-AdsBot on pages you submit to ChatGPT | OpenAI |
| You can measure the test | Ad links carry their own tracking tags, because Google reports AI placements in aggregate and Microsoft has no Copilot-only metrics | Google; Microsoft |
| Organic citations come first | Your free AI visibility check shows which AI answers cite you before you spend | Our advice |
| A budget and an end date | A small test budget with a set review date | Our advice |

**Our advice, not a vendor statement:** if you can only do one thing this quarter, fix the pages AI should be citing. Then, if your customers are on free ChatGPT or Google in a covered country, run a small, time-boxed ad test and compare it against what your citations already bring in. Rows marked "Our advice" are ours; every other row comes from the vendor or report named.

## FAQ

### Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

No. You can buy a labelled ad that shows at the bottom of a ChatGPT response, but Sam Altman said OpenAI would "not accept money to influence the answer." [NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/internet/openai-starts-testing-ads-chatgpt-rcna258242) [Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/openai-begins-testing-ads-in-chatgpt-for-free-and-go-users/566869/)

### Do Google ads help my site get cited in AI Overviews?

No. Google's Ads help says "Buying ads doesn't influence organic AI answers," and that being cited organically doesn't affect your ad eligibility either. [Google](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775?hl=en)

### Does Claude have ads?

No. Anthropic said on February 4, 2026 that "Claude will remain ad-free" and that advertisers will not influence its responses. [Anthropic](https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-is-a-space-to-think)

### Does Perplexity still sell sponsored questions?

Not as far as we can find. Perplexity launched them in November 2024, but the Financial Times reported in February 2026 that it began phasing out ads at the end of 2025. [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/why-we-re-experimenting-with-advertising) [TechCentral](https://www.techcentral.ie/perplexity-temporarily-halts-ads-over-concerns-about-user-trust/)

### Are my Microsoft Ads already showing in Copilot?

They may be. Microsoft says eligible campaigns are automatically opted in, advertisers cannot opt out, and Search ads need a logo to qualify. [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/advertising/msa-help/hlp_ba_conc_adsforcopilot)
