# Do online reviews affect AI recommendations?

> When someone asks an AI for "the best plumber near me," the answer often leans on reviews. But each AI reads reviews from a different place. Here is which review sites feed which assistant, and how to earn reviews without breaking the rules.

Updated October 1, 2026 · AI Syndicate team · https://www.aisyndicate.com/blog/do-reviews-affect-ai-recommendations/

**Quick answer:** Yes. Google says **more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking**, and Gemini now summarizes reviews in Google Maps. But each AI reads different review sites: **Google** uses its own reviews, **Apple Maps** shows **Yelp**, **ChatGPT** shows **Yelp** reviews through a Yelp partnership, and **Perplexity** uses **Tripadvisor**. Ask customers for honest reviews where your platform allows it. Never buy, filter or fake them; the FTC fines up to **$53,088 per violation**.

## What are the key facts about reviews and AI?

| Fact | Detail | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Google local ranking | Based on relevance, distance and popularity; more reviews and positive ratings can help | Google Business Profile Help |
| Google Maps | Gemini summarizes what people say in reviews | Google |
| Apple Maps reviews | From Yelp, plus Apple's own Like/Dislike ratings | Apple |
| ChatGPT | Shows Yelp reviews, ratings and photos in chat (Yelp partnership) | Yelp |
| Perplexity | Uses Tripadvisor's reviews for travel answers | Tripadvisor |
| Bing | Shows reviews from third-party sites, not Google's | Microsoft Q&A |
| Fake reviews | Banned by the FTC since Oct 21, 2024; up to $53,088 per violation | FTC |

## Do reviews really change what AI recommends?

For Google, Google says so directly. Its local ranking page says results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity," and that popularity includes "how many reviews you have. More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking." [Google Business Profile Help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091)

Google's AI now reads those reviews too. Gemini in Google Maps summarizes what people like about a place from its reviews. [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/gemini-google-maps-navigation-updates/) Ask Maps, launched in March 2026 in the US and India, answers questions using information from over 300 million places, "including reviews" from Maps contributors. [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/ask-maps-immersive-navigation/) And AI Mode's travel plans pull in "details from Google Maps like photos and reviews." [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/agentic-plans-booking-travel-canvas-ai-mode/)

Google hasn't published how much reviews weigh inside AI Overviews or AI Mode. What it does say is that there are "no additional requirements" to appear there, and that businesses should make sure their Business Profile information is up to date. [Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)

## Which review sites feed which AI?

This is the part most businesses miss. A great Google rating doesn't help you on Apple Maps or in ChatGPT, because they read other sites.

| AI or assistant | Where its reviews come from | What it rests on |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini in Maps | Google's own reviews on your Business Profile | Google, official |
| Apple Maps (and Siri) | **Yelp**, plus Apple's own ratings | Apple's data credits page |
| ChatGPT | **Yelp** reviews, ratings, photos and business details | Yelp's announcement |
| Perplexity | **Tripadvisor** reviews and summaries, for travel | Tripadvisor's announcement |
| Bing and Copilot | Third-party sites such as Yelp, Facebook and Tripadvisor; not Google | A Microsoft moderator's answer |

**Apple.** Apple's data credits for Maps list "Reviews from Yelp" and name Tripadvisor and Foursquare among its business listings providers. [Apple](https://gspe21-ssl.ls.apple.com/html/attribution.html) Apple Maps users can also rate places with Like or Dislike, though that isn't available everywhere. [Apple Support](https://support.apple.com/guide/maps/rate-places-and-add-photos-mps83639d282/mac)

**ChatGPT.** Yelp says its integration surfaces "Yelp's trusted reviews, ratings, photos, and business details directly within the chat experience," and since August 2026 lets people book tables at US and Canadian restaurants without leaving the chat. [Yelp](https://blog.yelp.com/news/yelp-chatgpt-integration/) Yelp also told investors it "signed an agreement with OpenAI." [Yelp Inc.](https://www.yelp-ir.com/news/press-releases/news-release-details/2026/Yelp-Delivers-Record-Net-Revenue-in-2025-Accelerating-Investment-in-AI-Transformation/default.aspx) We couldn't open OpenAI's own pages to confirm this from OpenAI's side.

**Perplexity.** Tripadvisor announced in January 2025 that Perplexity would use "Tripadvisor's one billion reviews and contributions" for travel planning. [Tripadvisor](https://tripadvisor.mediaroom.com/press-releases?item=126807)

**Bing.** Microsoft hasn't published formal documentation. A Microsoft Q&A moderator wrote that Bing's reviews come from "a curated list of third-party platforms" and that Bing "does not pull reviews directly from your Google Business Profile." [Microsoft Q&A](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5528564/can-bing-places-pull-reviews-from-google-business)

## Am I allowed to ask customers for reviews?

On Google, yes. On Yelp, no. The two platforms have opposite rules, so treat them separately.

**Google** tells businesses to ask: "you can ask customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code." [Google Business Profile Help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3474122) Its policy allows encouraging reviews of genuine experiences, as long as you don't offer incentives. [Google](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114)

**Yelp** says the opposite: "Businesses should never ask customers to write reviews." [Yelp](https://www.yelp.com/guidelines) Its software "may not recommend reviews that seem to be prompted or encouraged by the business," which means asked-for reviews can end up hidden. [Yelp for Business](https://biz.yelp.com/support-center/Reviews/Best_Practices/Don-t-Ask-for-Reviews/en-US)

So the practical move: send customers your Google review link or QR code. For Yelp, make sure your listing is complete and accurate, and let reviews come on their own. Since Yelp feeds both Apple Maps and ChatGPT, a correct Yelp listing matters even if you never ask for a single Yelp review.

## What's illegal when it comes to reviews?

In the US, the FTC's rule on fake reviews took effect on October 21, 2024. [FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/consumer-reviews-testimonials-rule-questions-answers) It bans:

- **Fake reviews**, including AI-written ones and reviews from people who never used the business, and buying them.
- **Paying for a certain kind of review**, meaning a reward that depends on the review being positive (or negative).
- **Insider reviews** by owners, staff or relatives without a clear disclosure.
- **Suppressing reviews**, including threats or intimidation to get a bad review taken down.
- **Fake "independent" review sites** a business secretly controls.
- **Fake social signals**, like bought followers or views.

[FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/federal-trade-commission-announces-final-rule-banning-fake-reviews-testimonials)

Penalties reach "up to $53,088 per violation," and the FTC sent warning letters to 10 companies in December 2025. [FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/12/ftc-warns-10-companies-about-possible-violations-agencys-new-consumer-review-rule) You can still offer a reward for leaving a review, but the FTC says you "can't suggest to consumers that their reviews must be positive (or negative)" to get it. Google is stricter: it bans incentives for reviews entirely.

> **Don't filter who you ask.** Google bans review gating. Its policy forbids businesses that "selectively solicit positive reviews from customers." [Google](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114) Send the same link to every customer, not just the happy ones.

Google also enforces this at scale. It says it blocked or removed more than 240 million policy-violating reviews in 2024. [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/google-business-profiles-ai-fake-reviews/)

## Should I reply to reviews?

Yes. Google says replying "shows that you value their feedback," and that "positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out." [Google Business Profile Help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091)

For a bad review, Google suggests a polite public reply and asking the reviewer to contact you by phone or email to sort it out privately. [Google Business Profile Help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3474122)

There's an AI angle too. Gemini summarizes what reviews say about a place, not just the star count. A calm reply that fixes a factual mistake (wrong hours, a service you don't offer) puts the correct fact on the page next to the complaint.

## What makes a review useful to AI?

Detail. Google's AI review summaries pull out "place attributes and reviewer sentiment" from what people write. [Google for Developers](https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/places/web-service/review-summaries) A review that says *"they replaced our water heater the same day and cleaned up after"* gives an AI something to repeat. *"Great!"* doesn't.

You can't tell customers what to write, and you shouldn't. But you can make it easy to be specific. A follow-up message like *"If you have a minute, we'd love to hear how the job went"* invites a story, not a star.

This is our advice, not a published rule: an AI asked for "a plumber who does same-day water heater installs" can only match you to that request if someone, somewhere, wrote those words about you.

## What should be on my review checklist?

| Check | Done when | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Google review link shared | Every customer gets the link or QR code | Google Business Profile Help |
| Same ask for everyone | No filtering for happy customers | Google |
| No rewards on Google | No discounts or freebies for Google reviews | Google |
| Yelp listing complete | Name, hours, category and photos are right; you don't ask for Yelp reviews | Yelp |
| Apple Business listing current | Your Apple Maps place card is correct | Apple |
| Tripadvisor listing claimed | If you're in travel, food or hospitality | Tripadvisor |
| Replies posted | Recent reviews, good and bad, have a reply | Google Business Profile Help |
| No fake or bought reviews | None from staff, family or paid services | FTC |

## How do I check what AI says about my reviews?

Ask each assistant the question your customers ask, like *"best roofer in Tampa,"* and look at what it says about you. Does it mention your rating? Does it repeat something from a review? Is it pulling from Google, Yelp or Tripadvisor?

Our [Prompt Simulator](/prompt-simulator/) runs one question across 12 engines at once. Our [Google Business Profile guide](/blog/google-business-profile-for-ai-search/) covers the rest of your listing, and [How to get recommended by Siri](/blog/how-to-get-recommended-by-siri/) covers Apple Maps.
