# Does AI give everyone the same answer?

> You ask ChatGPT for the best business like yours in town, and there you are. Your customer asks the same thing and gets a different list. That is not always luck. The big AI assistants can now remember who is asking, read their past chats, look at connected apps like Gmail, and use their location. Here is what each company says it uses, why your own test is the least typical one there is, and how to see what a stranger sees.

Updated November 3, 2026 · AI Syndicate team · https://www.aisyndicate.com/blog/does-ai-give-everyone-the-same-answer/

**Quick answer:** No. ChatGPT, Gemini, Google's AI Mode, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot all document ways to tailor answers to **the person asking**: saved memories, past chats, connected apps such as Gmail and Google Photos, and an estimated location. So an owner who checks from their own account, with years of chats about their business and their office's location, sees a **personal** answer, not a typical one. To see what a new customer sees, use a temporary or incognito chat, ask from the places your customers live, and ask the way they would.

**Our take:** Check AI the way a stranger would, because to the AI every new customer is a stranger. Each assistant in this guide documents at least one way to tailor replies to the asker: saved memories, past chats, connected Gmail or Photos, or a guessed location. An owner's account is full of their own business and sits in their own town, so it is the least neutral seat there is. A temporary or incognito chat asked from your customers' towns is a much fairer copy of what a buyer meets.

## Does AI give everyone the same answer?

No. Two people can type the exact same question and get different businesses back, partly because the assistant knows different things about each of them.

There are three main ways an assistant learns about the person asking:

- **Memory and past chats.** What you told it before, and sometimes your whole chat history.
- **Connected apps.** Your email, calendar, photos or search history, if you linked them.
- **Location.** A rough guess from your internet address, saved home or work addresses, or your device's precise location if you allowed it.

This is a different problem from randomness. Answers also wobble because models pick words with built-in chance, the web they search changes, and models get updated. We cover that side in [why AI answers change every time](/blog/why-ai-answers-change/). This guide is about the other half: **who is asking**. Even if an assistant had no randomness at all, your answer and your customer's answer could still differ, because the assistant is answering two different people.

Language is another "who" factor. If some of your customers ask in Spanish or French, see [do AI answers change by language?](/blog/do-ai-answers-change-by-language/)

## How does ChatGPT personalize answers?

ChatGPT personalizes in two main ways: memory and location.

**Memory.** OpenAI's Memory FAQ describes two settings. **Reference saved memories** covers facts you asked ChatGPT to keep. **Reference chat history** lets it draw on your past conversations. You can turn either off, and turning off saved memories also turns off chat history. OpenAI says that when you turn off chat history, what it learned from those chats is deleted from its systems within 30 days. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148-memory-faq)

Which plans get which memory features has changed several times in 2026, and we could not confirm the current split from OpenAI's own help page today, so treat any plan list you see elsewhere as **unconfirmed**.

**Location.** OpenAI's ChatGPT search help page says ChatGPT search uses a general location based on your IP address to give relevant local results. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search) So "plumber near me" from your shop and "plumber near me" from a customer's house across town can trigger different searches.

**The stranger view.** ChatGPT's **temporary chat** lets you choose, before your first message, whether the chat is personalized. OpenAI's Temporary Chat FAQ says the unpersonalized option does not use your memories or custom instructions, and temporary chats do not create new memories. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8914046-temporary-chat-faq) Note that temporary chat still knows roughly where you are, because location comes from your internet connection, not from memory.

## How do Gemini and Google AI Mode personalize answers?

Google personalizes through a feature called **Personal Intelligence**, plus location.

**Gemini app.** Google launched Personal Intelligence on January 14, 2026. It "connects Gmail, Photos, YouTube and Search in a single tap," and "Connecting your apps is off by default." It started as a US beta for paid Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. Google also warned of "over-personalization," where the model links unrelated topics. [Google](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/personal-intelligence/) Google's current overview page says it is rolling out as a beta to eligible users globally, "except for the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria," for personal accounts only, and "You must be over the age of 18." [Google](https://gemini.google/overview/personal-intelligence/)

**AI Mode in Google Search.** Google brought Personal Intelligence to AI Mode on January 22, 2026, using Gmail and Google Photos, and called it "strictly opt-in." Its own examples are about buying: after someone bought shoes from a brand, AI Mode suggested a new style from that brand. Google also says its systems "might incorrectly make connections between unrelated topics." [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/personal-intelligence-ai-mode-search/) On March 17, 2026, Google said "Personal Intelligence is available today in the U.S. for AI Mode in Search," and began rolling it out to free users of the Gemini app and Gemini in Chrome. [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/personal-intelligence-expansion/)

Google's AI Mode help page says personalization "references previous searches and activity saved in your Search Services History," and connected apps now include Gmail, Calendar and Google Photos. It also carries a notice: "We're currently updating settings for Google Search services," so menus may not match what you see. [Google](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/17212611?hl=en)

**Location.** Gemini's privacy hub, updated October 26, 2026, says Gemini uses "the general area from your IP address or the Home or Work addresses in your Google Account," and precise device location only with your permission. [Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/13594961?hl=en) Google Search can also place you using your device, your saved home or work address, and "your past activity." [Google](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/179386?hl=en) That page does not say whether the same rules apply inside AI Mode or AI Overviews, so that detail is **unconfirmed**.

**The stranger view.** In Gemini, Google says you can "regenerate responses without personalization for a particular chat" or "use temporary chats to have a conversation without personalization." [Google](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/personal-intelligence/)

## Do Claude, Perplexity and Copilot remember who is asking?

Yes. All three document a memory feature, and two document location use.

**Claude.** Anthropic says "Memory is on by default for Free, Pro, Max, and Ultra plans on the web, Claude Desktop, and Claude Mobile." On Team and Enterprise plans it starts off for each member. What Claude remembers includes "The people and places in your work and life." Paid plans can also search past chats. "Incognito chats are available to all Claude users," and they are not saved to memory or chat history. [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11817273-use-claude-s-chat-search-and-memory-to-build-on-previous-context) On location, Anthropic says Claude "may use your IP address to determine coarse-grained location (city/region level)" for features like web search, and you can turn that off in your privacy dashboard. [Anthropic](https://privacy.claude.com/en/articles/11186740-does-claude-use-my-location)

**Perplexity.** Perplexity's memory uses two things: saved memories ("The preferences, interests, and information you share with us") and previous searches. Helpfully, "Referenced memories appear in your answer's sources," so you can see when memory shaped an answer. "Memory and previous searches are always off when using incognito mode." [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10968016-memory) Perplexity's memory page does not mention location, and we could not open a Perplexity page about location today, so how it uses location is **unconfirmed** here.

**Microsoft Copilot.** Microsoft's support page for the consumer Copilot app says Copilot remembers your conversations to give "a more tailored experience," and, if a setting called Microsoft usage data is on, uses data from Bing, MSN, Edge and other Microsoft products you use. Turning off personalization and memory makes Copilot "forget its memories of your conversations." The page describes no incognito mode. It also notes that an updated Copilot app "is available as of August 18, 2026," and the page covers the older app, so whether every setting is the same in the new one is **unconfirmed**. [Microsoft](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-copilot/microsoft-copilot-privacy-controls) For work accounts, Microsoft says Copilot memory includes saved memories, details inferred from chat history and custom instructions, and the control is "turned on" by default (in preview). [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/copilot/copilot-personalization-memory)

## Why is a business owner's own AI test a biased sample?

Because the owner is the one person whose account is full of their own business.

Think about what the vendors say they use, then think about your own account:

- **Memory and past chats.** If you have used ChatGPT or Claude to write your ads, answer reviews or plan your website, those chats are about your business. Claude says its memory covers "The people and places in your work and life." [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11817273-use-claude-s-chat-search-and-memory-to-build-on-previous-context)
- **Connected apps.** If you linked Gmail to Gemini or AI Mode, your inbox is full of your own invoices, bookings and customer emails. Google's own examples show AI Mode using past purchases and bookings to shape suggestions. [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/personal-intelligence-ai-mode-search/)
- **Location.** You probably test from your office or shop. ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude all describe using a rough location from your internet address. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search) [Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/13594961?hl=en) [Anthropic](https://privacy.claude.com/en/articles/11186740-does-claude-use-my-location) Your customers live in other neighborhoods and towns.
- **Search history.** Google says AI Mode personalization draws on previous searches. [Google](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/17212611?hl=en) An owner who searches their own business name every week is not a typical searcher.

**Our advice, not a vendor statement:** none of the vendors publish how much each signal moves a recommendation, so we can't say your own test is wrong by a set amount. What we can say is that it is the least typical seat in the room. A result that looks great from your account proves very little about what a new customer sees.

The flip side matters too. Google's shoe example suggests that people who already bought from you may see you more. **Our advice, not a vendor statement:** treat that as a bonus for repeat business, not as proof that new customers can find you.

## How do I check what a stranger sees in AI answers?

Remove yourself from the test, then repeat it from your customers' side of town. **Our advice, not a vendor statement:** the steps below are our method. The vendor links show the setting each step relies on.

| Check | Done when | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Use ChatGPT temporary chat, unpersonalized | Picked "unpersonalized" before the first message | [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8914046-temporary-chat-faq) |
| Use a Gemini temporary chat | Chat runs without Personal Intelligence | [Google](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/personal-intelligence/) |
| Use Claude incognito | Incognito chat on; nothing saved to memory | [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11817273-use-claude-s-chat-search-and-memory-to-build-on-previous-context) |
| Use Perplexity incognito | No memories listed in the answer's sources | [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10968016-memory) |
| Test Google AI Mode signed out, or in a private browser window | No connected apps or search history in play | [Google](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/17212611?hl=en) |
| Ask from where customers are | Same questions asked from at least two or three customer areas, for example a staff phone at home | [Google](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/179386?hl=en) |
| Ask the way customers ask | Neutral questions that don't include your business name | [Our prompt guide](/blog/how-to-choose-prompts-to-track/) |
| Ask more than once | Each question asked several times, on different days | [Why answers change](/blog/why-ai-answers-change/) |
| Write it down | Date, engine, mode, location and whether you were named, in one sheet | [How to measure](/blog/how-to-measure-ai-visibility/) |

Two cautions. First, a private browser window only hides your Google sign-in; your internet address still gives away a rough location. Second, a VPN changes your apparent location, so only use one if you know which town it puts you in.

If you'd rather not do this by hand, the free [AI visibility check](/#tool) runs questions about your business across several AI engines, and the [Prompt Simulator](/prompt-simulator/) lets you test a specific question.

## What can a business change about personalized AI answers?

You can't change what an assistant knows about a customer, but you can change what it finds about you.

**What you can't influence:**

- A customer's saved memories, past chats or connected apps. These are private settings the customer controls. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148-memory-faq) [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/personal-intelligence-expansion/)
- Where a customer is when they ask.
- Which assistant, plan or mode they use. Even inside Google, Personal Intelligence depends on country, age and account type. [Google](https://gemini.google/overview/personal-intelligence/)

**What you can influence (our advice, not a vendor statement):**

- **Be clear about where you work.** If location shapes local answers, say plainly which towns and neighborhoods you serve, on your site and on your [Google Business Profile](/blog/google-business-profile-for-ai-search/).
- **Be easy to find for the non-personal part.** Personalization adjusts an answer; the public web still supplies the businesses to choose from. Make sure your basic facts are the same everywhere they appear.
- **Look after existing customers.** Google's examples show past purchases feeding future suggestions. Clear, branded receipts and booking emails are good business anyway.
- **Measure the stranger view, not your own.** Track a fixed set of neutral questions in personalization-free modes, over weeks. See [how to choose prompts to track](/blog/how-to-choose-prompts-to-track/) and [how to measure AI visibility](/blog/how-to-measure-ai-visibility/).

No vendor publishes how much personalization weighs against everything else in a recommendation. Anyone who claims to know that number exactly is guessing.

## FAQ

### Does ChatGPT give different answers to different people?

It can. ChatGPT can use saved memories and your past chats, and ChatGPT search uses a general location from your IP address for local results. Two people asking the same question can get different businesses. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148-memory-faq) [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search)

### Does Google's AI Mode use my Gmail?

Only if you connect it. Google calls Personal Intelligence in AI Mode "strictly opt-in," and connected apps include Gmail, Calendar and Google Photos. Google said on March 17, 2026 that it is available in the US for AI Mode. [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/personal-intelligence-ai-mode-search/) [Google](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/17212611?hl=en)
