# Does press coverage help you show up in AI answers?

> OpenAI, Perplexity, Google and Microsoft have all signed deals with news publishers, and Google's own guidance tells its reviewers to trust what independent sources say about a business over what the business says about itself. Here is how news coverage reaches AI answers, why a press release is not the same thing, and a plain plan for earning coverage worth quoting.

Updated October 7, 2026 · AI Syndicate team · https://www.aisyndicate.com/blog/does-press-coverage-help-ai-visibility/

**Quick answer:** Yes, earned coverage can help. OpenAI, Perplexity, Google and Microsoft have announced deals that feed **news content** into their AI products. Google tells its quality raters to **trust independent sources** when they disagree with a company's own claims. But Google treats keyword links in distributed press releases as **link spam**. Earn real stories with specific, checkable facts.

**Our take:** A news story is a second copy of your facts. Make sure it is the right copy. AI engines get direct news feeds through publisher deals, and Google's raters are told to believe independent sources over a company's own pages. So a story with an old address or a wrong founding year can outweigh your own fix. We'd hand every reporter a one-page fact sheet and chase corrections the same week.

## Which AI companies have deals with news publishers?

OpenAI, Perplexity, Google and Microsoft have all announced them on their own sites. We list only deals we could read on an official announcement page. Deals reported only by third parties are left out.

- **OpenAI.** When it launched ChatGPT search, OpenAI named 14 of its publisher partners, including Associated Press, Axel Springer, Condé Nast, Financial Times, Hearst, News Corp, Reuters and Vox Media. It said search uses third-party search providers "as well as content provided directly by our partners." [OpenAI](https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-search/) Its Financial Times deal promised ChatGPT users "select attributed summaries, quotes and rich links to FT journalism." [OpenAI](https://openai.com/index/content-partnership-with-financial-times/)
- **Perplexity.** Its Publishers' Program launched in July 2024 with TIME, Der Spiegel, Fortune, Entrepreneur, The Texas Tribune and WordPress.com. When Perplexity earns ad revenue from an answer that references a partner's content, that partner gets a share. [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-the-perplexity-publishers-program)
- **Google.** The Associated Press delivers a real-time news feed to the Gemini app. [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/news/associated-press-gemini-app/) In December 2025 Google said it was piloting a commercial partnership program with news publishers, to explore how AI can drive more engaged audiences. Partners include Der Spiegel, El País, The Guardian, The Times of India and The Washington Post. [Google](https://blog.google/products/search/tools-partnerships-web-ecosystem/)
- **Microsoft.** Copilot Daily, a spoken morning news summary, "will only pull from authorized content sources," with partners such as Reuters, Axel Springer, Hearst Magazines, USA TODAY Network and Financial Times. [Microsoft](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2024/10/01/an-ai-companion-for-everyone/) In July 2026 Microsoft signed a deal letting Copilot reference journalism from Nine's Australian mastheads, with links back to the articles. [Microsoft](https://news.microsoft.com/source/asia/2026/07/03/nine-microsoft-copilot-agreement/)

> **What a deal does and doesn't mean.** These announcements describe access, attribution and payment. None of the ones we read promises partner content a higher place in answers. What they do show is that AI companies value news enough to pay for it. For deals with Reddit and Wikipedia, see [where AI engines get their sources](/blog/where-ai-engines-get-their-sources/).

## Is news its own source in AI search?

Yes. Google, Bing and ChatGPT all treat news as a separate kind of result, with its own rules.

**Google.** Google Search has two news-only spots: the Top stories carousel at the top of results, and the News tab. News also appears in Google News, Discover and Google Assistant. Google said in 2021 that sites are "automatically considered" for these spots, with no application. [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2021/07/google-news-top-questions?hl=en) Ranking in Google News depends on relevance, prominence, authoritativeness, freshness, usability, and location and language. Google says it "doesn't accept payments" to improve a site's ranking there. [Google](https://support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/9606702?hl=en)

**Bing.** Publishers submit to Bing News through Bing News PubHub. Bing judges four things: newsworthiness, originality, authority and readability. Bing News content reaches people through Bing, Windows, Outlook and the Bing app. [Microsoft Bing](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/february-2022/Reach-millions-of-people-with-Bing-News-PubHub) How Copilot uses Bing is covered in our [Bing guide](/blog/bing-and-ai-answers/).

**ChatGPT.** OpenAI said it partnered with news and data providers to add "new visual designs" for categories including news, and that chats include links to sources "such as news articles and blog posts." [OpenAI](https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-search/)

The point for a business owner: when a question touches something recent, the engines have a whole channel that only news sites fill. Your own website can't appear there. A story about you can.

## Why does what others say about you count more than what you say?

Because Google's own guidance tells its reviewers to believe independent sources first. That guidance shapes how Google judges quality, and Google says the same foundational SEO best practices apply to its AI Overviews and AI Mode as to Search. [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)

Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines are the handbook for the people who check Google's results. The September 2025 edition says:

- Raters must ask "What do outside, independent sources say about them?" If a website and "reputable independent sources" disagree, "trust the independent sources."
- "Be skeptical of claims that websites make about themselves." Look instead for independent reviews, expert recommendations and news articles.
- News articles, magazine articles, Wikipedia articles, forum discussions and ratings from independent organisations "can all be great sources of reputation information."
- A company's own social media pages "would not be considered independent sources."

[Google](https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/guidelines.raterhub.com/en//searchqualityevaluatorguidelines.pdf)

Raters don't set rankings directly. Google says rater data "is not used directly in our ranking algorithms"; it helps Google check that its systems work. Its guide to helpful content asks site owners the same kind of question: "If someone researched the site producing the content, would they come away with an impression that it is well-trusted or widely-recognized as an authority on its topic?" [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content)

> **Our reading.** A reporter who checked your story and put their name on it is exactly the independent source Google describes. Your About page, however good, is you talking about you.

## Do press releases count as press coverage?

Not in the way earned coverage does. A press release is a statement you write and pay to distribute. A news story is something a reporter chose to write.

Google is specific on one point. Its spam policies list "links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases distributed on other sites" as an example of link spam. Paid placements should carry `rel="sponsored"` or `rel="nofollow"` on their links. [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies) Anchor text is the clickable words of a link, so a release stuffed with links like "best plumber in Dallas" is the pattern Google names.

Google's rater guidelines add a second point: sources "written or created by the website or the company itself" are not independent reputation information. [Google](https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/guidelines.raterhub.com/en//searchqualityevaluatorguidelines.pdf) A wire release, however widely it is reposted, is still written by the company.

Bing says product promotions are "not considered newsworthy" for Bing News. [Microsoft Bing](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/february-2022/Reach-millions-of-people-with-Bing-News-PubHub)

> **Our advice.** Releases still have uses. They put dates and facts on the record, and a good one can catch a reporter's eye. Just don't expect the release itself to do what a reporter's story does, and keep its links plain.

## Can a small local business get press that AI uses?

Yes, and local press may be the most realistic route. Local outlets cover local businesses as a matter of course, and some of them now feed AI products directly.

Perplexity's deal with Gannett covers USA TODAY and the USA TODAY Network's 200+ local publications, whose content will be "accessible in Perplexity answers." [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/welcoming-gannett-to-the-perplexity-publisher-program) Microsoft's Copilot Daily partners include the USA TODAY Network too. [Microsoft](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2024/10/01/an-ai-companion-for-everyone/) Google News ranks partly by location, and Google says its automated system has brought in publishers "from national brands to emerging local publications." [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2021/07/google-news-top-questions?hl=en)

If you have no coverage yet, that is not a mark against you. Google's rater guidelines say small websites may have little reputation information and "This is not indicative of high or low quality," because many local businesses "rely on word of mouth." [Google](https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/guidelines.raterhub.com/en//searchqualityevaluatorguidelines.pdf) Coverage simply gives AI engines more independent material to work from.

**Our advice: stories local reporters often run.**

- A new location, a big hire, or a milestone like 25 years in business.
- A useful local number only you have, such as how many burst pipes you fixed during a cold snap.
- An expert comment when your trade is in the news: a roofer after a hailstorm, an accountant before a tax deadline.

## What makes a news story easy for AI to quote?

Specific facts that someone can check. A story that says who, what, where, when and how many gives an AI engine something to repeat.

Bing's news guidelines reward "unique facts or points of view", and want sources, authors and attribution identified. [Microsoft Bing](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/february-2022/Reach-millions-of-people-with-Bing-News-PubHub) Google's helpful content guide asks whether content has "any easily-verified factual errors." [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content)

**Our advice: what to give a reporter.**

- **Your exact business name**, spelled the way it appears on your website and Google Business Profile.
- **Names and titles** of the people quoted, so the story has a real source.
- **Numbers with dates**: "installed 412 heat pumps in 2025", not "hundreds of installs".
- **Place**: the town or neighbourhood you serve, so the story ties you to a location.
- **One fact only you can supply**: a figure, a finding or a first.

> **Keep your facts identical everywhere.** If the article says you opened in 2009 and your site says 2011, an AI engine has to pick one. Give every reporter the same one-page fact sheet, and ask politely for a correction when a story gets something wrong. Our guide to [fixing what AI gets wrong about your business](/blog/ai-wrong-about-your-business/) covers the rest.

## How do I turn press coverage into AI visibility?

Earn a few real stories, make them easy to find, and keep their facts in line with yours. This is our advice, built on the guidance above.

1. **Find the outlets AI already cites.** Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude the questions your customers ask. Note every news or trade site in the sources. Those are your first pitch targets.
2. **Pitch a story, not an advert.** Lead with the fact a reporter can't get elsewhere. Bing doesn't treat product promotions as news, and reporters don't either.
3. **Never pay for a "feature" dressed as news.** Google lists paid articles with ranking links as link spam. If a placement is paid, it is an advert, and its links should be marked as sponsored.
4. **Keep a fact sheet on your site.** Name, founding year, owner, address, service area, licences and key numbers. Update it whenever something changes.
5. **Build an "As seen in" page.** List each story with the outlet's name, the headline, the date and a link to the article. Plain text with real links tells people and crawlers where the independent proof lives. A row of logos with no links proves nothing.
6. **Check each story for errors.** Ask for corrections promptly and politely.
7. **Aim for the trade press too.** A respected trade magazine or association newsletter is an independent expert voice. Google's rater guidelines call recommendations from expert sources, such as professional societies, "strong evidence of a positive reputation."

## How do I check whether my coverage shows up in AI answers?

Ask the engines your customers' questions every month and look at the sources behind each answer. Check two things: whether a story about you is cited, and whether the answer repeats its facts correctly.

The [Prompt Simulator](/prompt-simulator/) runs one question across several AI engines and lists the sources each one cites, so you can see which news and trade sites carry weight in your market. Our free [AI visibility check](/#tool) shows whether you are named today. [PR & Press](/pr-press/) flags the outlets AI engines already cite about your space and tracks each placement you earn.

## FAQ

### Do AI companies pay news publishers?

Some announce paid or licensed access. The Financial Times called its OpenAI deal a "licensing agreement", Perplexity shares ad revenue with Publishers' Program partners, and Google is piloting a commercial partnership program on AI with publishers such as The Guardian and The Washington Post. [OpenAI](https://openai.com/index/content-partnership-with-financial-times/) [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-the-perplexity-publishers-program) [Google](https://blog.google/products/search/tools-partnerships-web-ecosystem/)

### Will a press release get my business into ChatGPT or Google's AI answers?

Not reliably. A release is the company describing itself, and Google's rater guidelines say content created by the company itself is not an independent source. Google also lists keyword-rich links in distributed press releases as link spam. A reporter's story about the same news is far more useful. [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies) [Google](https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/guidelines.raterhub.com/en//searchqualityevaluatorguidelines.pdf)

### Does local newspaper coverage matter for AI?

It can. Gannett licensed its 200+ local publications to Perplexity in July 2025, and Microsoft's Copilot Daily partners include the USA TODAY Network. Google News also ranks partly by location. Local stories are often the easiest coverage for a small business to earn. [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/welcoming-gannett-to-the-perplexity-publisher-program) [Microsoft](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2024/10/01/an-ai-companion-for-everyone/)

### Do I need to be in Google News for my coverage to count?

No. You don't need your own site in Google News; the outlet that covers you does. Google automatically considers news sites for Google News and Top stories, with no application. Coverage on any reputable independent site still counts as reputation information under Google's rater guidelines. [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2021/07/google-news-top-questions?hl=en)

### Should I add an "As seen in" page to my website?

Yes, if it links to the real articles. List the outlet, headline, date and a working link for each story. That points people and crawlers to the independent sources Google's rater guidelines tell reviewers to look for. Logos without links, or outlets that never covered you, do the opposite. This is our advice.
