# How to show up in Amazon Rufus

> Amazon's AI shopping assistant now answers questions right in the Amazon search bar. Here is what Amazon says it reads, what sellers can change, and where ads and outside stores fit, as of October 2026.

Updated October 7, 2026 · AI Syndicate team · https://www.aisyndicate.com/blog/how-to-show-up-in-amazon-rufus/

**Quick answer:** Rufus, renamed **Alexa for Shopping** on May 13, 2026, answers from Amazon's **product catalog, customer reviews, community Q&As and the web**. To show up, fill every listing attribute, write bullets that answer real shopper questions, earn honest reviews and enroll in **Brand Registry**. Paid **sponsored prompts** are separate. Off-Amazon stores join through **Shop Direct**.

**Our take:** On Amazon, the detail page now writes both the free answer and the paid one. Amazon says Rufus answers from listing details, reviews and Q&As, and that sponsored prompts draw on detail pages too. So we'd fill every blank attribute and put plain yes-or-no answers in the bullets before raising a single bid.

## What is Amazon Rufus, and is it still called Rufus?

Rufus is Amazon's AI shopping assistant, and since May 13, 2026 Amazon calls it **Alexa for Shopping**. Amazon says it brings "together Rufus and Alexa+" in the Amazon Shopping app and on the website. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/alexa-for-shopping-ai-assistant) [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-rufus-ai-assistant-personalized-shopping-features)

Rufus launched in beta on February 1, 2024, as an assistant that answers shopping questions inside the normal Amazon app. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-rufus)

Today shoppers meet it in more places than a chat box. Amazon says they can now type questions straight into the main search bar, compare products picked from search results, and see AI-written overviews at the top of search results and on product detail pages. A product detail page is the page for one item, with its title, photos, bullets and reviews. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/alexa-for-shopping-ai-assistant)

It is free for any signed-in U.S. customer. Amazon says "no Prime membership or Echo device" is needed. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/alexa-for-shopping-ai-assistant)

It is also big. Amazon says Rufus "helped over 300 million customers in 2025" research, compare and buy products. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/alexa-for-shopping-ai-assistant) In November 2025 Amazon added that customers who use it while shopping are "over 60% more likely to make a purchase during that shopping trip." [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-rufus-ai-assistant-personalized-shopping-features)

This guide says "Rufus" because that is the name most sellers still search for. Everything here applies to Alexa for Shopping.

## What information does Rufus use to answer shoppers?

Mostly your listing, your reviews and your customer questions, plus the wider web. At launch Amazon said Rufus answers questions on a product page "based on listing details, customer reviews, and community Q&As." [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-rufus)

Amazon's own scientists describe the same mix. They wrote that Rufus "pulls information from sources it knows to be reliable, such as customer reviews, the product catalogue, and community questions and answers." [Amazon Science](https://www.amazon.science/blog/the-technology-behind-amazons-genai-powered-shopping-assistant-rufus)

For bigger questions about products and trends, Amazon says it also reads outside publications such as The New York Times, USA Today, Good Housekeeping and Vogue. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-rufus-ai-assistant-personalized-shopping-features)

Then there is the shopper. Alexa for Shopping remembers "your personal preferences, shopping history, and conversations from across both Amazon.com and Alexa." [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/alexa-for-shopping-ai-assistant) So two people asking the same question can get different products.

> **What this means for you.** You can't change a shopper's history or what Vogue writes. You can change your listing, and you can earn honest reviews. Those are the inputs Amazon names that a seller controls.

## How do I get my products recommended by Rufus?

Make your product detail page answer the questions shoppers actually ask. Amazon hasn't published how Rufus ranks products, and we couldn't find a public seller page that explains it. So this section is our advice, built on the inputs Amazon does name.

Amazon's listing guide breaks a detail page into parts: a product name, a description, "up to five bullets" with your most important details and attributes, up to nine photos, and a Product Details tab for facts like color, item count and number of components. [Sell on Amazon](https://sell.amazon.com/blog/amazon-product-listings) An attribute is one of those labeled facts.

1. **Fill in every attribute that applies.** If a shopper asks for a "dishwasher-safe water bottle under 20 ounces," Rufus can only match you if those facts are on the page.
2. **Write bullets that answer questions.** Amazon's own sample questions include "Does this blender crush ice?" and "Is this water bottle dishwasher safe?" [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-rufus-ai-assistant-personalized-shopping-features) Put a plain yes or no in your bullets.
3. **Say who it's for.** Shoppers ask by purpose, like "what do I need for cold weather golf?" [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-rufus) Name the use, the user and the occasion in words.
4. **Use all nine photo slots.** Show size, scale and what's in the box. Keep key facts in your text too, not only inside images.
5. **Keep facts the same everywhere.** Title, bullets, attributes and A+ Content should never disagree.

### Can Amazon's AI tools help me write the listing?

Yes. Amazon says its Enhance My Listing tool suggests "product titles, attributes, descriptions, and missing details," and sellers can review, change or decline each one. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/innovation-at-amazon/amazon-generative-ai-seller-growth-shopping-experience) We'd check every suggestion against the real product. A wrong attribute is worse than a blank one, because the assistant may repeat it.

### Why does Brand Registry matter here?

Brand Registry is Amazon's free program for brand owners. Once your brand is enrolled, Amazon says "only you and other sellers associated with your brand" can create or suggest updates to your detail pages through the standard process. [Sell on Amazon](https://sell.amazon.com/blog/amazon-product-listings) That protects the facts Rufus reads.

It also unlocks A+ Content: extra images, text, comparison charts and, in the Premium version, Q&A modules on your detail page. Amazon says Basic A+ Content "can increase sales by up to 8%." [Sell on Amazon](https://sell.amazon.com/tools/a-content) Brand Registry also gives access to Amazon Vine for early reviews and Brand Analytics for the words customers search with. [Sell on Amazon](https://sell.amazon.com/brand-registry)

## Do reviews and customer questions affect Rufus?

Yes. Amazon names customer reviews and community Q&As as sources in both its launch post and its scientists' write-up. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-rufus) [Amazon Science](https://www.amazon.science/blog/the-technology-behind-amazons-genai-powered-shopping-assistant-rufus)

Reviews also feed Amazon's other AI buying tools. Help Me Decide, a button that picks one product for a shopper, explains its choice with "insights from customer reviews." [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-things-to-buy-help-me-decide-gen-ai)

That cuts both ways. If many reviews say a jacket runs small, expect the assistant to tell shoppers that. The fix is the product or the sizing chart, not the wording.

Our advice: ask every buyer for a review, not only happy ones. Never buy, swap or write reviews. If your brand is enrolled in Brand Registry, Amazon Vine is Amazon's own program for getting early reviews on a new product. [Sell on Amazon](https://sell.amazon.com/brand-registry) Our guide on [whether reviews affect AI recommendations](/blog/do-reviews-affect-ai-recommendations/) covers the rules in more detail.

## Can I pay to show up in Rufus?

Yes, but the paid spots are separate ads, and they are built from your listing too. Amazon Ads says existing sponsored ads campaigns "are automatically eligible to serve in Alexa for Shopping" with no extra setup. [Amazon Ads](https://advertising.amazon.com/library/news/agentic-shopping-advertising)

The newer format is **Sponsored Products prompts and Sponsored Brands prompts**. These are short AI-written ad messages that appear in shopping results and on product pages. When clicked, they "may open a dialog in Rufus." They went from free beta to paid, cost-per-click ads in the U.S. on March 25, 2026. [Amazon Ads](https://advertising.amazon.com/resources/whats-new/unboxed-2025-sponsored-products-and-sponsored-brands-prompts)

| What Amazon Ads says | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| Setup | Existing campaigns are enrolled automatically |
| What the prompts draw on | "Your detail pages, Brand Store, campaign data, and more" |
| Control | You can pause any prompt in the Ads Console |
| Reporting | A Prompts report shows each prompt's text, clicks, spend, sales and more |
| Who can use them | U.S. advertisers, excluding authors and publishers |

Source: [Amazon Ads](https://advertising.amazon.com/resources/whats-new/unboxed-2025-sponsored-products-and-sponsored-brands-prompts)

Amazon Ads also says "nearly 20% of shoppers who interact with a prompt continue the conversation about that brand." That is Amazon's own figure, not ours. [Amazon Ads](https://advertising.amazon.com/library/news/agentic-shopping-advertising)

If you already run Sponsored Products, open the Prompts report before changing anything. It lists the prompts Amazon has already shown and shoppers have clicked, with the ad each one belongs to.

## Can Rufus recommend products I sell outside Amazon?

Yes, through a program called **Shop Direct**. Amazon says it shows products from other online stores when shoppers search on Amazon, including inside Rufus. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-shop-direct-external-stores)

A shopper who finds your product there gets two buttons. **Shop Direct** sends them to your website. **Buy for Me**, on eligible products, has Amazon's AI complete the purchase on your site for them, using their Amazon address and card. You still handle delivery, returns and customer service. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-shop-direct-external-stores) Amazon says brands "have the choice" whether to take part. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-shopping-app-buy-for-me-brands)

As of March 11, 2026, Amazon said Shop Direct had "over 100 million products from more than 400,000 merchants." Merchants can join by sending their catalog through feed services Amazon names: Feedonomics, Salsify and CEDCommerce. A product feed is a file that keeps your products, prices and stock in sync with another site. Amazon says a direct merchant feed is "coming soon," and other merchants can write to `shopdirect@amazon.com`. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/amazon-shop-direct-external-stores)

If you sell mainly on your own website, Shop Direct is the route into Amazon's assistant. For ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity, see our guide to [getting products into AI shopping answers](/blog/how-to-get-products-into-ai-shopping/).

## How does Rufus relate to Alexa+ and Amazon's web crawlers?

Rufus and Alexa+ now share what they learn about a shopper, and Amazon's crawlers are a separate matter. Amazon says what you tell Alexa on an Echo informs your shopping on Amazon, and the reverse. When a shopper asks for something that isn't shopping, like music or smart-home control, Alexa for Shopping hands off to Alexa+. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/alexa-for-shopping-ai-assistant)

For local services, bookings and voice, read our guide on [getting recommended by Alexa+](/blog/how-to-get-recommended-by-alexa/).

Amazon's developer page lists three crawlers: [Amazon Developer](https://developer.amazon.com/amazonbot)

| Crawler | What Amazon says |
| --- | --- |
| `Amzn-SearchBot` | Allowing it makes your content "eligible to appear in search experiences such as Alexa"; not used for AI training |
| `Amzn-User` | Fetches live web pages when a customer's question needs current information; "may not follow all robots.txt directives"; not used for AI training |
| `Amazonbot` | Improves Amazon's products and services and "may be used to train Amazon AI models" |

Amazon doesn't say which of these, if any, feeds Rufus's web answers. Our advice: don't block `Amzn-SearchBot` or `Amzn-User` by accident. For products, though, the routes Amazon actually documents are your Amazon listing and a Shop Direct feed, not crawling.

## What should be on my Rufus checklist?

| Check | Done when | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Attributes complete | Every Product Details field that applies is filled | Sell on Amazon |
| Bullets answer questions | Each of your five bullets states a fact a shopper would ask about | Our advice |
| Photos | All nine slots used; key facts also written in text | Sell on Amazon |
| AI suggestions checked | Enhance My Listing ideas reviewed against the real product | Amazon |
| Brand Registry | Your brand is enrolled, so only you can update the page | Sell on Amazon |
| A+ Content | Added to your main products | Sell on Amazon |
| Honest reviews | Asked from every buyer; Vine used for new products | Our advice |
| Ads reviewed | Prompts report read before you change bids | Amazon Ads |
| Off-Amazon store | Catalog sent to Shop Direct through a supported feed | Amazon |
| Crawlers | `Amzn-SearchBot` and `Amzn-User` not blocked by mistake | Amazon Developer |

To test, open the Amazon Shopping app, tap the Alexa icon or type a question in the search bar, and ask what your buyers ask. Note which products come back and what the assistant says about yours. To see how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other assistants answer the same question, our [Prompt Simulator](/prompt-simulator/) runs it across 12 engines at once.
