# When does ChatGPT search the web, and when does it answer from memory?

> Every AI answer about your business comes from one of two places: what the model learned in training, or a web search it runs while the customer waits. The two paths reward different work on different timelines. Here is how each engine decides, how to tell which path an answer took, and what to do about both.

Updated October 7, 2026 · AI Syndicate team · https://www.aisyndicate.com/blog/when-does-chatgpt-search-the-web/

**Quick answer:** ChatGPT searches the web when a question **would benefit from current information**, and otherwise answers from its **training data**, which stops at a knowledge cutoff. You can force a search from the tools menu. Answers that searched usually show **citations or a Sources button**. Questions about businesses, prices and "best" options tend to trigger search, so being crawlable today matters.

**Our take:** Fix the search path first, because memory is a lagging record you cannot edit on demand. Anthropic's published rules send questions about organizations that might have changed to a live search, and that is exactly what a buyer asks about a business. The memory path only moves when a new model ships, and that model already stopped learning months earlier. So we start with crawler access and plainly stated facts on the site, and treat a broad, consistent footprint across the web as the slower work that shapes whichever model comes next.

## What are the key facts about when AI engines search the web?

Checked against each company's own documentation on 7 October 2026.

| Fact | Detail | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT decides on its own | It "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information" | OpenAI |
| You can force a ChatGPT search | Tools menu, then **Search**, or type `/` and pick Search | OpenAI |
| Claude publishes its rule | It searches for recent events, current prices, organizations or products "that might have changed," and explicit requests. It answers directly for stable facts | Anthropic |
| Gemini decides per question | The model "determines if a Google Search can improve the answer" | Google |
| Perplexity is search-first | When you ask, it uses AI "to search the internet in real-time" | Perplexity |
| Copilot uses Bing | It sends a short generated query to "the Bing search service" | Microsoft |
| Memory has an end date | Example cutoffs: GPT-6 Luna (OpenAI API), May 18, 2026; Claude Opus 5.5, Jun 2026 | OpenAI, Anthropic |
| ChatGPT search needs one bot | Sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" | OpenAI |
| Training and search bots are separate | GPTBot and ClaudeBot gather training data; OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot serve search | OpenAI, Anthropic |
| How to spot a search | Search answers carry citations or a Sources button | OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Perplexity |

## What is the difference between answering from memory and searching the web?

Answering from memory means the AI uses only what it learned in training. Searching means it looks things up on the live web first, then writes its answer from what it found.

**Memory (training data).** A model learns from a huge pile of text, then training stops. The last date its data covers is the **knowledge cutoff**. OpenAI says its models learn from information "publicly available on the internet," among other sources, and "do not store or retain copies of the data they are trained on." They learn patterns, not pages. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7842364-how-chatgpt-and-our-foundation-models-are-developed)

**Live search (grounding).** "Grounding" means tying an answer to real sources fetched right now. Google describes it as connecting Gemini "to real-time web content" so it can cite sources "beyond its knowledge cutoff." [Google](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/google-search) The technical name for this pattern is [retrieval-augmented generation](/glossary/retrieval-augmented-generation/).

> **What this means in plain words:** memory is a photo of the web taken months ago. Search is a look out of the window today. Your business needs to look right in both.

For which search index each engine uses, see [Where AI engines get their sources](/blog/where-ai-engines-get-their-sources/).

## When does ChatGPT search the web?

ChatGPT searches when it judges that your question needs current information. OpenAI's wording is that ChatGPT "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information." [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt)

OpenAI does not publish a full rulebook. Its examples are current information and local results such as restaurants, news and weather.

When ChatGPT does search, three things happen that matter to a business:

- **It rewrites your question.** ChatGPT "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" for its search providers, and may send "additional, more specific queries" after reading the first results.
- **It uses rough location.** For "good restaurants near me" asked from the San Francisco area, OpenAI says ChatGPT may search for "top restaurants San Francisco."
- **It may use memory to shape the search.** With memory on, a saved detail such as being vegan can turn into "good vegan restaurants San Francisco."

All three come from the same OpenAI page, which also says search is available on every plan from Free to Enterprise, and to people who are not signed in. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt)

> **Our advice:** assume any question a customer asks about a local service, a price, a comparison or "the best" option will trigger a search.

## How do Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot decide whether to search?

Each one decides differently, and only some of them say how.

**Claude** has the clearest published rule. Anthropic's developer docs say Claude searches when a request depends on information that is "current, changing, or outside its training data." Its list: recent events and news; "Current prices, rates, scores, or statistics"; "Information about specific organizations, people, or products that might have changed"; and explicit requests to search. For stable facts, maths or creative writing it answers directly. [Anthropic](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-search-tool) In the Claude app, Anthropic says the new experience has no toggle: "Claude searches the web when it helps." [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enable-and-use-web-search)

**Gemini** decides question by question. With Grounding with Google Search, the model "analyzes the prompt and determines if a Google Search can improve the answer." If it can, the model writes one or more Google searches and runs them. [Google](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/google-search)

**Perplexity** is built around search. Its help center says that when you ask a question, it uses AI "to search the internet in real-time," and each answer includes numbered citations. [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work)

**Microsoft Copilot** (the work version documented on Microsoft Learn) reads your prompt, picks out the terms where web information would help, and sends a few words to Bing. Microsoft's own examples include prompts where "No web search queries are generated." [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/copilot/manage-public-web-access)

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are different again: their supporting links must be pages "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) Across all of them, questions about a specific business, its prices or how it compares are the ones these rules send to search.

## How can I tell whether an AI answer searched the web?

Look for sources. An answer built from a live search almost always shows where it came from.

| Engine | Sign that it searched | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | Inline citations, and a **Sources** button listing cited and related links | [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt) |
| Claude | An indicator that it is searching, then citations and source links in the reply | [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enable-and-use-web-search) |
| Gemini | A **Sources** button below or inside the response | [Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/14143489?hl=en) |
| Perplexity | Numbered citations on every answer | [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work) |
| Copilot Chat | The exact search queries sent to Bing, shown in the citation section for 24 hours | [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/copilot/manage-public-web-access) |

Google is honest about the gap: "Not all responses include related links or sources." No Sources button means Gemini gave no links for that answer. [Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/14143489?hl=en)

> **Our advice:** an answer with no citations is *probably* from memory, but treat that as a clue, not proof. A cited answer names the pages the engine trusted. Open them. If an old directory listing is speaking for you, that is your to-do list. OpenAI itself warns that citations "can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect." [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt)

## How do I make ChatGPT search the web?

Turn search on by hand. In ChatGPT, OpenAI gives these steps: [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt)

1. Open a conversation.
2. Select **View all tools**.
3. Select **Search**.
4. Type your question and send it.

You can also type `/` in the message box and pick **Search**, or regenerate an answer and choose **Search the web** when it's offered. In voice mode, you can simply ask ChatGPT to search. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt)

**In Claude**, Anthropic suggests putting "Search the web" or "Use web search" in your prompt. You can also tell Claude *not* to search. [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enable-and-use-web-search)

> **Our advice for testing your own business:** ask each question twice: once with search forced on, once asking Claude not to search. Right with search but wrong from memory means the gap is old training data. The reverse means search bots may not be reaching your site.

## What does the memory path mean for my business?

It means what you published before a model's cutoff is what that model "knows" about you, and nothing you change today reaches it.

We only print cutoffs we read on the companies' own model pages:

| Model | Knowledge cutoff | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol (OpenAI API) | Apr 30, 2026 | [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models) |
| GPT-6 Luna (OpenAI API) | May 18, 2026 | [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models) |
| Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 | Jun 2026 (reliable knowledge cutoff) | [Anthropic](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/models/overview) |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | Feb 2025 (reliable knowledge cutoff) | [Anthropic](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/models/overview) |

Anthropic defines its "reliable knowledge cutoff" as the date through which a model's knowledge "is most extensive and reliable." [Anthropic](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/models/overview) The ChatGPT app's models are a different list from the API, and OpenAI's release notes show them changing through 2026. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9624314-model-release-notes)

Three things follow:

- **Old facts linger.** If you moved, rebranded or changed prices after a cutoff, a model answering from memory may repeat the old version. That is one common reason [AI gets a business wrong](/blog/ai-wrong-about-your-business/).
- **New businesses may be missing.** A business that barely existed online before the cutoff gives the model little to learn from.
- **Training access is a separate choice.** OpenAI says disallowing **GPTBot** "indicates a site's content should not be used in training." Anthropic's training crawler is **ClaudeBot**. [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/8896518-does-anthropic-crawl-data-from-the-web-and-how-can-site-owners-block-the-crawler)

> **Our advice:** the memory path rewards being described the same way, in many places, for a long time. Keep your name, location and services consistent across your site, directories, review sites and press. You can't speed up the next model, but you can give it a clear picture.

## What does the search path mean for my business?

It means you are judged on what search bots can read on your site *today*. If they can't reach you, you can't be cited, however good your page is.

- **ChatGPT:** allow **OAI-SearchBot**. OpenAI says opted-out sites "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers," though they can still appear as navigational links, and robots.txt changes take "~24 hours" to apply. Its help page adds that your host or CDN must allow traffic from OpenAI's published search bot IP addresses. [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt)
- **Claude:** allow **Claude-SearchBot** and **Claude-User**. Anthropic says blocking either may reduce your site's visibility in search results or in answers to a user's question. [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/8896518-does-anthropic-crawl-data-from-the-web-and-how-can-site-owners-block-the-crawler)
- **Perplexity:** allow **PerplexityBot**, which is "designed to surface and link websites in search results" and is not used to train AI models. [Perplexity](https://docs.perplexity.ai/guides/bots)
- **Copilot:** be findable in Bing. See [Bing and AI answers](/blog/bing-and-ai-answers/).
- **Google AI Overviews and AI Mode:** be indexed in Google Search with a snippet allowed. [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)

Then make the page easy to quote. State your services, prices, hours and service area in plain text on the page, not only in images or scripts. See [Can AI read JavaScript websites?](/blog/can-ai-read-javascript-websites/)

> **Our advice:** blocking training bots and allowing search bots is a legitimate mix. The mistake we see is a blanket firewall bot block that catches the search bots too. Your [server logs](/blog/how-to-see-ai-bots-in-your-server-logs/) will show it. For the rules themselves, see [Which AI crawlers should you allow](/blog/ai-crawlers-robots-txt/).

## How do I check both paths for my business?

| Check | Done when | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Search bots allowed | OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, PerplexityBot and Googlebot are not blocked in robots.txt or at your CDN | OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google |
| Training choice made on purpose | You decided whether to allow GPTBot and ClaudeBot, rather than inheriting a default | OpenAI, Anthropic |
| Key facts in plain text | Services, prices, hours and area are readable on the page | Our advice |
| Forced-search test | Your top customer questions asked with search on, citations opened | OpenAI, Anthropic |
| Memory test | The same questions asked with search off or declined, answers compared | Anthropic, our advice |
| Cited pages reviewed | You know which outside pages engines cite for you, and they are current | Our advice |
| Consistent footprint | Name, address and services match across your site and major listings | Our advice |
| Every engine covered | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity, Copilot and others your buyers use | Our advice |

To run one question across many engines at once and see which ones cite sources, try our [Prompt Simulator](/prompt-simulator/). Answers vary from run to run, so read [why AI answers change](/blog/why-ai-answers-change/) before you judge any single result.

## FAQ

### Does ChatGPT always search the web?

No. OpenAI says ChatGPT "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information." Otherwise it answers from its training data. You can force a search from the tools menu or by typing / and choosing Search. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt)

### What is ChatGPT's knowledge cutoff?

It depends on the model. OpenAI's developer models page lists Apr 30, 2026 for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, and May 18, 2026 for GPT-6 Luna. The models in the ChatGPT app change often, so check OpenAI's release notes for what you are using. [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models) [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9624314-model-release-notes)

### How can I tell if ChatGPT used web search in an answer?

Look for inline citations or a Sources button. OpenAI says responses that use web search may include citations, and Sources lists the cited and related links. [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt)

### If I update my website, when will ChatGPT know?

For answers that search, once its search systems can reach the updated page; OpenAI says robots.txt changes for OAI-SearchBot take about 24 hours to apply. For answers from memory, only when a newer model trained on later data is released. [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots)

### Can I block AI training but still appear in ChatGPT search?

Yes. OpenAI runs separate bots: disallowing GPTBot signals your content should not be used for training, while OAI-SearchBot is the one that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Anthropic splits ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot the same way. [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/8896518-does-anthropic-crawl-data-from-the-web-and-how-can-site-owners-block-the-crawler)
