How to show up in Grok
Grok, xAI's assistant, can search two places: the open web and posts on X. Here is what xAI says about each, and what a business can do to be found in both.
Grok answers current questions by searching the web and X. xAI says Grok draws on "posts from X and webpages from the broader internet," and it cites its sources. To show up, keep your site crawlable and clear. Then run an active X account that names what you do and where. Grok can search X posts, users and threads.
Where does Grok get its answers?
When xAI added web search and citations to Grok in December 2024, it said: "Now Grok draws upon posts from X and webpages from the broader internet to provide timely and accurate answers to your queries." It also said it was rolling Grok out "to all users on X for free." xAI

Both tools return citations, so a source Grok uses can appear as a link in the answer. That makes Grok different from most assistants. Besides your website, your presence on X is a second place Grok can find you.
How do I get my website found by Grok's web search?
We couldn't find xAI documentation that names a web crawler or gives site owners guidance, the way Anthropic and Apple do. Without that, the safe course is to make your site readable by any reasonable crawler and easy to quote:
- Don't block unknown bots by default. A firewall or CDN setting that only lets known search engines in can shut out assistants that don't announce themselves. Check what your bot protection actually does.
- Serve real text in the HTML. Pages that only show content after JavaScript runs are harder for any assistant to read. Your key facts should be in the page source.
- Answer the question first. Grok's web tool says it extracts relevant information. Put the direct answer in the first sentence under each heading, before the backstory.
- Make facts self-contained. Write sentences like "We repair commercial HVAC systems in Austin and Round Rock" that still make sense when quoted alone.
- Keep one set of facts. Your site, your profiles and your listings should say the same thing about your name, services, prices and hours.
How do I show up in Grok through X?
X Search can search posts by keyword and by meaning, find users, and pull whole threads. xAI Docs Those capabilities suggest four things to set up on X:
- A profile that says who you are. Put what you do and where in your name and bio, for example "Tampa family law firm" rather than a slogan. Grok can search users, so a clear profile is findable.
- Posts that use the words customers use. Grok's X search matches keywords and meaning. Post about the services and questions people actually search for, in plain language.
- Threads that answer a whole question. Grok can fetch full threads. A thread that answers "how much does a roof replacement cost in Tampa" from start to finish is a complete source.
- Regular, recent activity. X search can be limited to a date range, so recent posts matter for questions about what's current. An account that went quiet two years ago has little to offer.
None of this means posting more for its own sake. Grok can only find what is there, and a business with no X presence gives it nothing to cite from X.

How do I check whether Grok mentions me?
Ask Grok the questions your customers ask, at grok.com or inside X, and check the cited sources as well as the text. See whether it links your website, your X posts, or a competitor.
