How to show up in Microsoft Copilot
Copilot's web answers run on Bing. Here is what Microsoft says about that, and the Bing-side steps that give your pages a chance to be cited.
Microsoft Copilot looks things up with Bing. Microsoft says that when web search is on, Copilot turns your question into a search query and sends it to the Bing search service. So being found in Copilot starts with being found in Bing: verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap, use IndexNow, and write clear, well-structured pages.
How does Microsoft Copilot pick its sources?
Microsoft explains the mechanics in its documentation for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat. When web search is enabled, Copilot reads the user's prompt, picks out terms where web information would help, and "generates a search query that it sends to the Bing search service asking for more information." Bing's own team says the same content shows up across its AI products. Its AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools counts how often your pages are cited as sources in "Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations." Bing Webmaster Blog
Put together: Copilot's web search goes through Bing. In our reading, a page Bing has not found or indexed is unlikely to be one Copilot's web search can hand back. Microsoft does not publish exactly how Copilot chooses among the results, so the rest of this guide sticks to what Bing tells publishers to do.
What does Bing say makes content easier for AI answers to use?
When Bing launched the AI Performance report in February 2026, it gave publishers five recommendations. In short: Bing Webmaster Blog

How do I get my site into Copilot answers, step by step?
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. It is Bing's free tool for site owners. Bing lists several ways to prove you own the site, including a DNS record, a meta tag, an uploaded file — or importing your verified sites straight from Google Search Console. Bing Webmaster Blog
- Submit your XML sitemap. A sitemap is a file that lists your pages. Submit it in Bing Webmaster Tools and watch its status for errors. Bing also suggests listing it in robots.txt, for example

lastmodhonest. Each page's last-modified date in the sitemap should be when the page really changed — not when the sitemap was generated — in ISO 8601 format with date and time. - Check nothing blocks Bing. Review robots.txt and any firewall or bot protection. Bing Webmaster Tools includes a URL Inspection tool and a Site Scan tool for checking pages. Bing Webmaster Blog
- Rewrite key pages for clarity. Answer the question first, then use headings, a table and a short FAQ, per Bing's recommendations above.
- Watch the AI Performance report. See which pages get cited and for which queries, then improve the pages that should be cited but are not.

How do I see whether Copilot cites my site?
Start with Bing's AI Performance report. It shows total citations, the average number of your pages cited per day, the grounding queries (the phrases the AI used when it fetched content it then cited), and citation counts for each of your URLs. Bing is careful to say these numbers show how often pages are cited, not their "importance, ranking, or placement" in an answer. Bing Webmaster Blog
The report tells you when you were cited, but not when a competitor was cited instead. For that, you need to ask the questions yourself. Is Copilot just Bing?
Not exactly, but its web answers lean on Bing. Microsoft says Copilot generates a search query from your prompt and sends it to the Bing search service when web information would help. Microsoft Learn
Does IndexNow guarantee my page gets indexed?
No. The IndexNow documentation says a 200 response "only indicates that the search engine has received your URL." It speeds up discovery; it does not promise crawling or inclusion. IndexNow
Which search engines use IndexNow?
IndexNow lists Microsoft Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep, and says submitted URLs are shared automatically with all participating engines. IndexNow IndexNow documentation Google is not on that list.
Do I need a separate Bing account if I already use Google Search Console?
You need a Bing Webmaster Tools account, but Bing lets you import sites you have already verified in Google Search Console, so you skip re-verifying. Bing Webmaster Blog
