How Reddit shapes what AI says about you
Ask an AI for "the best accountant in Tampa" and it may quote a Reddit thread you've never seen. Here is why Reddit shows up in so many AI answers, which engines lean on it, and how a business can take part without breaking Reddit's rules.
Reddit is one of the sites Google's AI answers cite most: Ahrefs ranked it #1 in Google AI Mode (17.9%, Sept 2026). Google and OpenAI both license Reddit content through Reddit's Data API. So what people say about you on Reddit can end up in AI answers. Join honestly: use a clearly labeled business account (Reddit Pro is free), answer questions, and disclose who you are. Never fake posts or votes.

Why does AI quote Reddit so much?
Because Reddit is full of real people asking for recommendations and answering each other, and the biggest AI companies pay for access to it.
Google signed a deal in February 2024 that gives it Reddit content through Reddit's Data API, so it can "display, train on, and otherwise use it in the most accurate and relevant ways." Google
OpenAI followed in May 2024. Reddit said: "OpenAI will bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products," using the Data API, which provides "real-time, structured, and unique content from Reddit." Reddit
Reddit's CEO described how this data gets used on the company's July 2026 earnings call: for training, post-training, grounding, and "as a search index." Reddit In plain words: AI models learn from Reddit, and some also look things up on Reddit while writing an answer.
Reddit also protects that content. It has sued AI companies it says took it without a deal: Anthropic in June 2025 TechCrunch, and Perplexity with three data-scraping firms in October 2025. Adweek Those are Reddit's allegations, and the cases are still in court.
Which AI engines cite Reddit most?
Google's, by a wide margin. No AI company publishes its own numbers, so these come from outside studies.
- Google AI Mode: Reddit was the #1 most-cited site in the US in September 2026, with a 17.9% share, just ahead of YouTube. Ahrefs
- ChatGPT: Semrush tracked 230,000 prompts from July to October 2025. ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60% of responses in early August, then about 10% by mid-September. Semrush
- Reddit's own claim: Reddit told shareholders it is "the #1 most cited domain for AI across all models," based on data from an outside tracking firm. Reddit
What is Reddit Answers?
It's Reddit's own AI search. Reddit launched it in December 2024 as "a new way to get the information, recommendations, discussions, and hot takes people are looking for" from conversations across Reddit, with links back to the posts. Reddit
It went worldwide in beta in October 2025 in six languages, and in May 2026 Reddit merged it into Reddit search. By mid-2025 it already had 6 million weekly users. Reddit
So Reddit is now an AI answer engine itself. Someone searching Reddit for "best family dentist in Austin" gets an AI summary of what Redditors said, and your name is either in those threads or it isn't.
Can my business post on Reddit?
Yes, if you're open about who you are. Reddit bans the shortcuts. Its rules prohibit "content manipulation" (Rule 2) and "engaging in deceptive interactions" (Rule 5). Reddit That covers fake accounts posing as happy customers, coordinated posting, and buying or trading votes.
US law points the same way. The FTC says that if you post about your company, "you should disclose your relationship to the company," and that a note on your profile isn't enough because "people who just read what you post won't get that information." FTC The FTC's fake-review rule also bans undisclosed reviews by owners and staff. FTC
The honest route is Reddit's own. Reddit Pro is free and lets a business "find, engage, and grow your customers on Reddit," set up a profile, and "offer customer support on Reddit." Reddit for Business
How do I show up in Reddit threads the right way?
This is our advice. Reddit hasn't published a playbook for businesses beyond Reddit Pro and its rules.
- Find the threads that already mention you. Search Reddit for your business name, your street or neighborhood, and "best [your service] in [your city]." Reddit Pro can track keywords for you.
- Answer questions in your field, as yourself. A roofer explaining how to spot hail damage, signed with the company name, helps people and is allowed in many communities. A post pretending to be a neighbor recommending that roofer isn't.
- Fix facts politely. If a thread has your hours, prices or services wrong, say who you are and correct it. AI engines that read the thread will see the correction next to the mistake.
- Handle complaints in public, then privately. A short, calm reply plus an offer to sort it out by phone shows the next reader (and the next AI) how you treat customers.
- Don't ask for upvotes or posts. Asking customers to post or vote for you is the coordinated behavior Reddit's rules target.
- Make your own site the clear source. Redditors often link to the page that answers the question. If your site states prices, service areas and hours plainly, that's the page that gets linked.

How do I check whether AI is using Reddit to describe me?
Ask Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, and look at the sources each answer lists. If Reddit threads show up, open them and read what they say about you and your competitors. Then search Reddit itself for the same question.
Our Prompt Simulator runs one question across 12 engines at once and shows which sources each one cites. If an AI is repeating something wrong it picked up from a thread, AI is wrong about your business covers how to correct the record.
