ChatGPT ranking factors: what OpenAI confirms, and what is a guess

OpenAI does not publish a ranking formula. It does publish a few hard rules. Here they are, with the source for each, and the checks we add on top.

Quick answer

OpenAI does not publish a list of ChatGPT ranking factors. It says ChatGPT search "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information" and that "placement is not guaranteed." What it does confirm: your site must let OpenAI's search robot, OAI-SearchBot, read it, your web host must not block OpenAI, and local results use the searcher's approximate location.

Does OpenAI publish ChatGPT's ranking factors?

No. OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search says only this about ranking: ChatGPT "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed." OpenAI Help Center

So any article that lists "the 20 ChatGPT ranking factors" is a list of guesses. Some guesses are good. But nobody outside OpenAI can prove the order, the weights, or the full list.

What OpenAI does publish is a short set of rules about who can appear at all. Those are the only true "factors" anyone can quote, so we start there.

Which ranking factors has OpenAI confirmed?

These four come straight from OpenAI's own pages. The first two are gates: miss either one and your site cannot appear at all. The other two describe how ChatGPT search works.

One more rule from OpenAI's crawler page: after you change robots.txt, "it can take ~24 hours" for ChatGPT search to catch up. OpenAI crawlers

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from showing my site?

Not by itself. OpenAI runs different robots for different jobs, and people mix them up all the time. OpenAI crawlers

  • OAI-SearchBot is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features." This is the one that decides whether you can show up in ChatGPT search.
  • GPTBot crawls content that "may be used in training" OpenAI's models. Blocking it says your content should not be used for training.
  • ChatGPT-User visits a page when a person asks ChatGPT to. OpenAI says it is "not used to determine whether content may appear in Search."

A mistake we often see is a robots.txt file that blocks every AI robot to stop training, and blocks OAI-SearchBot along the way. That site then cannot appear in ChatGPT search at all. If you want to stay out of training but stay in search, block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot.

In robots.txt that is two short blocks: User-agent: OAI-SearchBot with Allow: /, and User-agent: GPTBot with Disallow: /.

What else seems to decide who ChatGPT recommends?

Below is our own checklist, not OpenAI's. It is what we check on every site we work on, because each item is either a gate above or something that makes a page easy to quote. Treat it as good practice, not a proven formula.

  1. Crawl access. OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt, and not blocked by a firewall or bot filter. We test this from outside, not just by reading the file.
  2. Being in a search index. OpenAI says it sometimes uses other search providers, and its help page links to Microsoft's privacy statement. Our inference: being indexed by Bing, Microsoft's search engine, cannot hurt. So we submit every site and its sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools, which is free. Bing Webmaster Blog
  3. One page per real question. A page that answers "how much does X cost in Y town" in its first two lines is easier to quote than a page that answers ten things at once.
  4. Plain facts, stated the same everywhere. Business name, address, services, prices, hours. When your site, your Google Business Profile and your directory listings disagree, an AI answer has to pick one.
  5. Proof other people wrote. Reviews and mentions on sites you do not own. BrightLocal found that 40% of consumers trust AI platforms to give business recommendations, so what those platforms read about you matters. BrightLocal
  6. Dates on pages. A visible "updated" date, so a reader and a crawler can tell the facts are current.

Which "ChatGPT ranking factors" are myths or unproven?

  • "You need an llms.txt file to rank." OpenAI's pages do not say this. Google, for its own AI features, says the opposite: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear." Google Search Central An llms.txt file is cheap to add. It is not a proven ranking factor.
  • "ChatGPT ranks by keyword density." Nothing OpenAI has published says so.
  • "You can pay to be recommended." OpenAI does run ads in ChatGPT and checks ad pages with its own robot, OAI-AdsBot. That is a separate, labelled product, not the answer ranking. OpenAI crawlers
  • "Someone can guarantee you a spot." OpenAI's own words: "Placement is not guaranteed."

How do I check where I stand in ChatGPT?

Ask it. Open ChatGPT in a private or temporary chat, and ask the questions your customers ask: "who's the best [your service] in [your town]?" Write down whether you are named, what is said, and which sites are cited.

One answer is not a result. Answers change from one ask to the next, so ask the same question several times over a few days. That is the job our Prompt Simulator and weekly tracking do automatically. To check the crawl-access gates above in about a minute, run the free AI visibility audit.

FAQ

Common questions

What are the ranking factors for ChatGPT?

OpenAI does not publish them. It says ChatGPT search "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information" and that "placement is not guaranteed." It confirms a few gates: allow OAI-SearchBot, make sure your host allows OpenAI's search IP addresses, and for local questions it uses the searcher's approximate location.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to find websites?

OpenAI says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers." It does not name them as search partners, but the same section links to the privacy policies of Microsoft and Shopify. OpenAI does not say how each is used, so we make sure sites are indexed by Bing as a precaution.

How long does it take ChatGPT to notice a robots.txt change?

OpenAI says "it can take ~24 hours from a site's robots.txt update" for its systems to adjust.

Can I stop ChatGPT training on my site but still appear in ChatGPT search?

Yes. Block GPTBot, which OpenAI uses for training, and allow OAI-SearchBot, which OpenAI uses to show sites in ChatGPT search.
