How to get cited by every AI engine
Google says good SEO is all its AI answers need. But ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, Siri, Meta AI and the rest don't use Google's index. They run their own crawlers and read other indexes. Here is one method that covers Google and everyone else, without trading one off against the other.
Use two layers. Layer 1 is what every engine needs, Google included: pages that can be crawled and indexed, answers in the first sentence, facts that match everywhere, and markup that matches the page. That alone covers Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Layer 2 is for everyone else: allow each engine's own crawler (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and others), get into Bing and Brave, keep your Apple listing current, and publish llms.txt and Markdown copies for AI agents. Google says those extras don't help or hurt you in Google Search, so doing both costs you nothing there.
Why isn't optimizing for Google enough?
Because most AI engines don't read the web through Google. Google's own guide puts it plainly: "From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." Google Search Central That's true for Google. The other engines get their pages elsewhere:
| Engine | Where it gets web pages | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Its own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, plus search partners | OpenAI |
| Claude | Its own crawlers, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User; reported to search Brave | Anthropic, Simon Willison |
| Perplexity | Its own crawler, PerplexityBot | Perplexity |
| Microsoft Copilot | The Bing index | Microsoft |
| Brave AI answers | Brave's own index of about 40 billion pages | Brave |
| DuckDuckGo Search Assist | Its crawler DuckAssistBot; links mostly from Bing | DuckDuckGo |
| Siri | Applebot and Apple Maps place cards | Apple |
| Meta AI | Its crawler Meta-WebIndexer, plus public posts | Meta |
| Mistral Vibe | Its crawlers MistralAI-User and MistralAI-Index | Mistral |
| Alexa+ | Its crawler Amzn-User, plus partner services | Amazon |
| Grok | Web search plus posts on X | xAI |
| DeepSeek | Unnamed search partners; trained partly on Common Crawl | DeepSeek |
So a site can be perfect for Google and still be invisible to ChatGPT, for example because a firewall blocks OAI-SearchBot or because the site isn't in Bing. Google has no reason to warn you about that.
What is the two-layer method?
It splits the work into what every engine needs and what only some engines use.
- Layer 1, the foundation. Everything Google asks for, which also happens to be what every other engine needs. Do it first.
- Layer 2, the reach. The extra steps that let engines outside Google find and trust you. Google ignores them, and the others use them.
The point of the split is that the two layers never conflict. Nothing in Layer 2 costs you anything in Google. On llms.txt, Google says these files "won't negatively or positively impact your visibility or rankings" in Google Search, and "it's fine if you want to maintain these files for other services or systems that use them." Google Search Central
What goes in Layer 1?
The basics every engine rewards, because every engine has to find, read and trust a page before it quotes it:
- Crawlable and indexed. Google says a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." Google Search Central Other engines need the same thing from their own crawlers.
- Text in the HTML. Key facts should be readable without JavaScript. Some crawlers run it; many don't.
- Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first sentence under each heading, so a short passage can be quoted on its own.
- Facts that match everywhere. Name, address, services, prices and hours should be the same on your site, listings and profiles.
- Markup that matches the page. Google says structured data isn't required for its AI features, but if you use it, it must match what readers see. Google Search Central
- Real proof. Reviews, credentials and mentions from other sites that back up what you say.
What goes in Layer 2?
The steps that reach engines outside Google. Each one is cheap, and each has an engine that says it matters:
| Step | Which engines it helps | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Allow each engine's search crawler | ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Meta AI, Mistral, DuckDuckGo, Alexa+ | OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers |
| Check your firewall, not just robots.txt | All of them | Bot protection often blocks AI crawlers that robots.txt allows |
| Get indexed in Bing | Copilot, DuckDuckGo, ChatGPT's partners | Microsoft says Copilot sends web searches to Bing |
| Stay crawlable for Googlebot | Brave, and the AI apps that use Brave's index | Brave's crawler follows your Googlebot rules |
| Keep your Apple Business listing current | Siri, Apple Maps, DuckDuckGo maps | Siri uses Apple Maps place cards |
| Post publicly on Facebook, Instagram and X | Meta AI, Grok | Both draw on public posts from their own apps |
| Publish llms.txt and Markdown copies | AI agents and coding assistants | The llms.txt author says agents use these files reliably |
| Keep schema accurate and complete | Brave, Microsoft | Brave pays "special attention" to schema.org when building AI answers |
On schema: Google calls it optional for its AI features, while Microsoft says schema "helps search engines and AI systems understand your content." Microsoft Advertising Brave's head of search said in 2024 that it pays "special attention to schema.org structured data when building the context of the LLM prompt." Search Engine Journal So keep your markup accurate: Google won't mind, and Microsoft and Brave both say they use it.
On llms.txt: no major answer engine has said it uses the file to pick sources. Its author says it's used mostly by AI agents, and that coding agents "use them reliably." llmstxt.org It's a small file. Treat it as reach for agents, not as a ranking lever.
How do I apply the method, step by step?
- Fix access first. Make sure Googlebot, Bingbot and each AI search crawler can reach your key pages, in robots.txt and at your firewall.
- Get indexed in Google and Bing. Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and submit a sitemap to each.
- Rewrite the openings. Make the first sentence under each heading answer that heading's question.
- Line up your facts. Make your site, Google Business Profile, Apple Business listing and main directories say the same thing.
- Check your markup against the page. Keep only structured data that matches visible text, and fill it in completely.
- Add the agent files. Publish an llms.txt and Markdown copies of your main pages.
- Post where the engines look. Keep public Facebook, Instagram and X accounts that say what you do and where.
- Measure every engine, not one. Ask each assistant your customers' questions and see who it cites.
Where are the guides for each engine?
Each engine has its own page with its crawlers, its sources and its checklist:
- ChatGPT and ChatGPT ranking factors
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode and Gemini
- Claude and Perplexity
- Microsoft Copilot and Brave Search
- Siri and Alexa+
- Meta AI and Grok
- Mistral Vibe, DeepSeek and DuckDuckGo

How do I know it's working on every engine?
Google now reports AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions in Search Console's generative AI performance report, and Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations in Copilot. Google Search Central Bing Webmaster Blog Neither covers ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or the rest.
For those, you have to ask them. Put the same customer questions to each assistant and note who it names and links. Answers change from day to day, so check more than once. Our Prompt Simulator runs one question across 12 engines at once, and how to measure AI visibility covers what to track over time.

Common questions
Is GEO just SEO?
For Google, yes: Google says that from its perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. For other engines, no. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Meta AI and others use their own crawlers or other indexes like Bing and Brave, so they need steps Google doesn't. Google Search Central
Does llms.txt hurt my Google rankings?
No. Google says llms.txt files won't negatively or positively impact your visibility or rankings in Google Search, and that it's fine to keep them for other services that use them. Google Search Central
Do I need schema markup for AI search?
Not for Google's AI features, which Google says don't require it. Microsoft says schema helps search engines and AI systems understand your content, and Brave has said it pays special attention to schema.org data when building AI answers. Keep it accurate and matching the page. Microsoft Advertising
Which AI crawlers should I allow?
At least the search crawlers that decide citations: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User for Claude, PerplexityBot, Meta-WebIndexer, MistralAI-User and MistralAI-Index, DuckAssistBot and Amzn-User, plus Googlebot, Bingbot and Applebot. Training crawlers are a separate choice. OpenAI
Why am I in Google's AI answers but not ChatGPT's?
Usually because ChatGPT can't read your site. OpenAI says sites that block its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and firewalls often block it even when robots.txt allows it. OpenAI
