Do backlinks matter for AI citations?

For twenty years, links were the way to get found. AI answers work differently. Here is what the two biggest public studies measured about backlinks versus brand mentions, what Google itself says about links and its AI features, what the AI companies have not said, and what a small business should do instead of buying links.

Quick answer

Less than you'd think. In Ahrefs' May 2025 study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overviews visibility at 0.664; raw backlink counts scored 0.218. Semrush's October 2025 study of 1,000 domains found link authority still tracks AI mentions, mostly at higher tiers. Google says its AI runs on Search, where buying links is spam. Earn mentions instead.

Do backlinks correlate with showing up in AI answers?

Weakly, and far less than being talked about does. The biggest public study is from Ahrefs, an SEO software company. These are Ahrefs' measurements, not numbers from Google or OpenAI.

In May 2025 Ahrefs took 75,000 brands and checked how often each one was mentioned in millions of Google AI Overviews. Then it ran Spearman correlations between those mentions and the brand's SEO metrics. Ahrefs

  • Branded web mentions: 0.664. How often the brand name appears across the web was the strongest signal measured.
  • Branded anchors: 0.527. Links whose text is the brand name.
  • Branded search volume: 0.392. How many people search the brand name.
  • Domain Rating: 0.326. Ahrefs' own score for a site's link strength.
  • Referring domains: 0.295.
  • Number of backlinks: 0.218. Raw link count was near the bottom.

The gap is wide. Brands in the top quarter for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions. Brands in the next quarter down averaged 14. The bottom half averaged 0 to 3.

In December 2025 Ahrefs ran the same study across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. Branded web mentions scored 0.664 in ChatGPT, 0.709 in AI Mode and 0.656 in AI Overviews. A new factor, YouTube mentions, came out on top at about 0.737. On links, the author wrote that they found "very weak correlations between link metrics" and brand mentions in every engine. Ahrefs

Read this carefully. Ahrefs says in both posts that correlation is not causation. The data shows that brands people talk about a lot also show up in AI answers a lot. It does not prove that getting one more mention earns you one more citation. Big, well-known brands have lots of mentions and lots of everything else.

Does any study say backlinks still matter for AI?

Yes. Semrush, another SEO software company, found that link authority still tracks with AI mentions, so this is not a story where links mean nothing.

In October 2025 Semrush studied 1,000 randomly chosen domains across ChatGPT, ChatGPT with Search, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. It compared each domain's Authority Score, Semrush's own blend of link quality, referring-domain variety and traffic, against how often the domain was mentioned. Semrush

  • Authority Score vs AI mentions: Pearson 0.65, Spearman 0.57. That is a real relationship.
  • Authority Score vs AI share of voice: Pearson about 0.23, Spearman about 0.36. Weaker, and Semrush reads the gap as a threshold: gains show up mainly after a site reaches the higher authority tiers.
  • Nofollow links: Spearman 0.509, almost the same as followed links at 0.504. Semrush wrote that "Nofollow links have nearly the same impact on AI visibility as standard follow links."
  • Variety over volume: links from many different sites tracked AI visibility better than sheer link count.

Semrush's headline was "Backlinks Still Matter, But Quality Trumps Quantity in AI Search." Its advice was to get mentioned and cited for content that adds value, through digital PR, expert articles and trusted industry resources, not to buy links. Semrush did not add a causation warning in that post, so we will: a strong Authority Score is also a sign of an established brand, and established brands get mentioned for many reasons.

A second Semrush study, published July 2026, looked at who "owns" a topic in ChatGPT across 50,000+ brands and 1,094 US categories tracked from January to June 2026. When two brands competed for the same topic, the winner had the higher Authority Score only 52.5% of the time, close to a coin flip. Semrush concluded that "traditional SEO metrics aren't enough to explain who owns a topic." Semrush

How the two studies fit together: a site with almost no links and no mentions is invisible to AI. Links help you get into the running. Once several brands are in the running, how much the web talks about you, and how well you cover the topic, decides who gets named.

Do the sites AI cites most have the most links?

Not in a way that explains their citations. Ahrefs checked this directly in June and July 2025, using the 50 most-cited domains in each engine from about 76.7 million AI Overviews, 957,000 ChatGPT prompts and 953,500 Perplexity prompts.

First, Ahrefs compared each top domain's link strength (its Ahrefs Rank, based on the size and quality of its followed referring domains) with how often the engine mentioned it. The Spearman correlations were -0.12 for AI Overviews, 0.01 for ChatGPT and -0.34 for Perplexity. None was strong, and ChatGPT showed no relationship at all. Ahrefs

Then Ahrefs asked a different question: does it matter whether the pages that mention you are well linked? Here the answer varied by engine. The correlation with AI visibility was 0.70 for AI Overviews, 0.40 for Perplexity and 0.12 for ChatGPT. Ahrefs The author gave the usual correlation-is-not-causation warning, "especially here."

The sites that get cited most are the sites that already hold a lot of what people say and know. In Ahrefs' June 2025 count, Wikipedia led ChatGPT at 16.3% of citations, YouTube led Perplexity at 16.1%, and YouTube (9.5%) and Wikipedia (8.4%) led AI Overviews. Ahrefs Semrush's 13-week study from July to October 2025, covering more than 100 million citations in ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, found Reddit, Wikipedia, LinkedIn and YouTube at the top, with ChatGPT's Reddit share swinging from close to 60% of responses in early August to about 10% by mid-September. Semrush

What this means for a small business: you will not out-link Wikipedia or Reddit. You can be named on them, and on the trade sites, review sites and local news pages your engine already trusts. For Google's AI, those well-linked pages carry extra weight.

What does Google say about links and its AI answers?

Google says its AI features run on the same ranking systems as Search, links are still one of those systems, and buying links is spam. It also says chasing fake mentions is not worth it.

AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on Search. Google's guide to its generative AI features, last updated July 2026, says they are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems" Google and that they use Google's core ranking systems to retrieve relevant web pages. A page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet in regular Search to appear.

Links are still a ranking system. Google's guide to its ranking systems lists "Link analysis systems and PageRank" among them. It says these systems read how pages link to each other to judge what pages are about and which might be most helpful, and that PageRank "continues to be part of our core ranking systems." Google Google's SEO starter guide adds that "Google primarily finds pages through links from other pages it already crawled." Google

Buying links is spam. Google's spam policies define link spam as links made "primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings." Google The examples include exchanging money, goods or services for links, sending someone a product in exchange for a post with a link, excessive link swaps, automated link programs, low-quality directory links, and paid articles whose links pass ranking credit. Paid links are allowed only when marked rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow".

Fake mentions don't help either. The same AI guide says Google's AI features can show what is being said about a business across blogs, videos and forums, but that seeking inauthentic 'mentions' "isn't as helpful as it might seem" Google because its ranking systems focus on quality and its spam systems block the rest. Its advice is to create content people find unique, compelling and useful.

Put together: at Google, a bought link is a policy violation and a planted mention is a waste. A real link from a real page that talks about you is still worth having, because it is also a mention.

What do OpenAI and Perplexity say about links?

Nothing. Neither company publishes a ranking factor list, and their crawler pages, the closest thing to official guidance, do not mention links at all.

Perplexity's bot page describes PerplexityBot as "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" Perplexity and Perplexity-User as the agent that visits a page when a user asks a question. The page covers robots.txt, firewall allow-lists and IP ranges. It says nothing about how sources are ranked or whether backlinks play a part.

OpenAI's crawler page describes three bots: OAI-SearchBot, which gathers pages for ChatGPT search; GPTBot, which collects training data; and ChatGPT-User, which fetches a page when a user asks. It says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. It also says nothing about links, backlinks or ranking. OpenAI

So every claim that "ChatGPT ranks by domain authority" or "Perplexity ignores backlinks" is unconfirmed. The only public evidence is the third-party correlation data above, and in that data ChatGPT showed the weakest link to link metrics of any engine.

What should a small business do instead of buying links?

This is our advice, built on what the studies measured and what Google permits. The goal is to be named on the pages AI already reads, with facts that agree everywhere.

  1. Find out where you stand. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google a few questions a customer would ask, like "best [your service] in [your city]." Note who gets named and which sites get cited. Those cited sites are your target list.
  2. Get listed where AI looks. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, your Bing Places listing, and the two or three directories your industry trusts. Use the same business name, address, phone and website on each. Skip low-quality directory links; Google names them as link spam.
  3. Earn reviews on the platforms that get cited. Ask every happy customer to review you on Google and on the review site your trade uses. Reply to reviews. Reviews are mentions in the places AI reads, and they come with the words customers actually use.
  4. Get real press and community mentions. Pitch a local reporter, a trade publication or an industry newsletter with something they would write about anyway: a new location, a data point, an expert quote. Ahrefs' advice after its study was "Focus on getting your brand discussed across the web." Ahrefs Do not pay for the article or demand a link; Google treats both as spam.
  5. Show up on YouTube and in forums, honestly. Ahrefs measured YouTube mentions as the single strongest factor in December 2025, and Reddit and Quora sit near the top of every citation list. Answer real questions under your real name. Never plant fake mentions; Google says they are not worth it.
  6. Make your own site the clearest source about you. Put your services, prices, hours, service area, people and history on pages a model can read without a login. Keep those facts identical to your directory listings and reviews profiles.
  7. Publish something only you can. Your own numbers, a before-and-after, a local price guide, a question your customers ask every week. This is what earns mentions and links without asking for them, and it is the content Google says will influence your presence in AI features.
  8. Keep the links you earn. If a partner, supplier or association links to you because they work with you, that is fine. Just do not trade money, goods or guaranteed reciprocal links for it.

How do I know if the mentions are working?

Ask the engines the same questions every month and watch two things: whether your name appears in the answer, and which sites get cited when it does. If a competitor is named and you are not, look at where they are mentioned that you are not, and start there.

Our free AI visibility check shows where ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers mention you today. The Prompt Simulator runs one question across the engines and shows which sources each one cites, so you can see which directories, review sites and publications are doing the work. FAQ

Common questions

Do backlinks help you get cited by ChatGPT?

There is no statement from OpenAI either way, and its crawler page says nothing about links. In Ahrefs' December 2025 study of 75,000 brands, link metrics showed very weak correlations with ChatGPT mentions, while branded web mentions scored 0.664 and YouTube mentions about 0.737. Those are Ahrefs' measurements, and correlation is not causation. Ahrefs

Are brand mentions more important than backlinks for AI Overviews?

In Ahrefs' May 2025 data, yes: branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 with AI Overviews visibility and number of backlinks at 0.218, across 75,000 brands. Google itself says AI Overviews run on its core Search ranking systems, which still include link analysis, so links are not irrelevant. Ahrefs Google

Should I buy backlinks to get into AI answers?

No. Google's spam policies list buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam, and its AI features sit on top of Search. Semrush's October 2025 study found link variety and quality tracked AI visibility better than volume, and nofollow links tracked it about as well as followed ones, so a bought followed link buys you nothing a real mention would not. Google Semrush

Do nofollow links count for AI visibility?

Semrush measured almost no difference: across 1,000 domains in October 2025, nofollow links correlated with AI mentions at Spearman 0.509 and followed links at 0.504. That is Semrush's measurement, not a statement from any AI company. Semrush

Does domain authority decide who AI recommends?

Not on its own. Semrush's July 2026 study of 50,000+ brands in ChatGPT found that when two brands competed for a topic, the one with the higher Authority Score won only 52.5% of the time. Ahrefs found no meaningful relationship between the link strength of the 50 most-cited domains and how often each engine cited them. Semrush Ahrefs

Can I just get my name mentioned everywhere, even in fake posts?

Google says no. Its guide to generative AI features says seeking inauthentic mentions across the web is not as helpful as it might seem, because its ranking systems focus on quality and its spam systems block the rest. Earn mentions from real customers, real press and real community answers. Google
