Does your Google Business Profile affect AI answers?

What Google actually says, what we see in our own work, and a checklist for keeping the profile accurate.

Quick answer

For Google's own AI answers, yes: Google lists keeping your Business Profile information up to date as a best practice for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Other AI engines don't say whether they use it. In our experience it is the most-copied public record of a local business's name, address, phone and hours — so keeping it accurate matters everywhere.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI answers?

Here is what we can say from a source, and what we can only say from experience.

What Google says. A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business on Google Maps and in Google Search. In its guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google lists "checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date" among its best practices. Google Search Central That is the only direct link between a Business Profile and an AI answer we found in any engine's own documentation.

What other engines say. We have not found ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini's app or Microsoft Copilot documentation that says they read Google Business Profiles. So we won't claim they do.

What we see. In our experience, your Business Profile is the most-copied public record of your name, address, phone number and hours. Directories, map apps and review sites tend to repeat what it says. When those copies agree, AI answers have one clear version of the facts. When they disagree — an old phone number here, last year's hours there — we see AI answers repeat the wrong one. That is why keeping the profile consistent with your website and listings matters, whichever engine is answering.

What does Google say my Business Profile has to get right?

Google's guidelines for representing your business are specific. The main rules: Google Business Profile Help

FieldGoogle's rule, in plain words
NameYour real-world name, as used on your storefront, website and stationery. No taglines, keywords, phone numbers or store codes
AddressYour actual, real-world location. P.O. boxes or mailboxes at remote locations are not accepted
Service areaBusinesses that visit customers set one profile with a service area, which shouldn't extend farther than about 2 hours' drive from base
HoursYour regular customer-facing hours
PhoneA number that connects to that location — a local number rather than a central call center where possible
CategoriesAs few as possible, describing what your business is, not what it has

These rules are about honesty, and they line up with what makes AI answers accurate: one real name, one real address, one working phone number.

How do I keep my Business Profile accurate, step by step?

  1. Claim and verify the profile. Google's first tip for local ranking is "Verify your business." Google Business Profile Help
  2. Fill in every field that applies. Google lets you edit your name, categories (up to 10), address, service area, hours, up to 3 phone numbers, website, description (up to 750 characters), opening date, attributes, photos and more. Google Business Profile Help
  3. Copy your details from one master record. Write down your exact name, address and phone once, and use that same text on your website, your Business Profile and every directory.
  4. Set special hours before holidays. Google's special hours cover short changes; for closures of 7 or more days in a row, or of unknown length, Google says to mark the business Temporarily closed instead. Google Business Profile Help
  5. Check back after you edit. Google says it reviews changes before they go live on your profile. Google Business Profile Help
  6. Watch for suggested edits. Customers can "suggest an edit" on a profile. Check your profile regularly so a wrong suggestion doesn't stick. Google Business Profile Help
  7. Keep it active. Google's local tips include responding to reviews and adding photos and videos. Google Business Profile Help

What if AI answers still get my details wrong?

First, fix the source. Correct the Business Profile, then your website, then the directories that show the old version. Then wait and re-check: AI answers do not update the moment you save. Our guide to what to do when AI is wrong about your business walks through the rest.

Checking a dozen listings by hand gets old quickly. AI Syndicate's Local tool, included on every plan, reads your Business Profile the way buyers see it, checks your listings across 13 map and directory platforms, and flags every place your own pages disagree about your name, address or phone. If you run several locations, the work multiplies — see AI visibility for multi-location businesses.
