How to get your videos cited in AI answers

Third-party studies rank YouTube among the sites Google's AI answers cite most. But AI reads words, not pictures. Here is how to turn a video into something an AI engine can find, read and quote.

Quick answer

AI engines can't watch your video, so they rely on the words around it. Give each video its own watch page with a unique title and description, add VideoObject markup (name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate are required), and on YouTube add chapters and check your captions. Put the key facts in text on the page too. Ahrefs found YouTube is the most-cited site in Google AI Overviews (22.9%, Sept 2026).

Do AI engines really cite videos?

Yes, Google's AI answers do, a lot. Ahrefs studied more than 3 million US queries and found YouTube was the most-cited website in Google AI Overviews, with a 22.9% share. Ahrefs In Google AI Mode it ranked second at 17.8%, a hair behind Reddit. Ahrefs

Other engines lean on it much less. BrightEdge tracked citations from May 2024 to September 2025. YouTube's share was 29.5% in AI Overviews, 16.6% in AI Mode, 9.7% in Perplexity and just 0.2% in ChatGPT. BrightEdge

These are outside studies, not Google's word. Google's own help pages for AI Overviews and AI Mode don't mention video at all. The numbers above come from Ahrefs and BrightEdge counting citations themselves.

Microsoft is more direct. It says Copilot Search in Bing answers include "images and videos from your favorite publishers" and cite their sources prominently. Microsoft Bing Blog And Google says Gemini can find YouTube videos and help you understand what's in one. Gemini Apps Help

How does an AI engine know what's in my video?

Mostly from text: the title, the description, the captions, the chapter labels and the page the video sits on. That's why a great video with a vague title and no description is close to invisible.

Google's guidance for its AI features says the same thing in general terms. It recommends "supporting your textual content with high-quality images and videos" and "making sure that important content is available in textual form." Google Search Central

Read that order carefully. Video supports text. It doesn't replace it. If the answer to a customer's question is only spoken in minute four of a video, write it on the page as well.

Does each video need its own page?

For videos on your own site, yes, if you can. Google says to "create a dedicated watch page for each video" and to give each one a title and description "unique to that video." Google Search Central

The page matters more than the video. Google says the watch page must be indexed and "performing well in Search before its video can be considered for indexing." A video buried on a page that doesn't rank won't get picked up.

A few more rules from the same page:

  • Don't hide the video. It can't sit behind other elements on the page (paywalled video with the right markup is the exception).
  • Use a real thumbnail. At least 60x30 pixels, larger preferred, at a URL that doesn't change.
  • Tell Google about it. Google reads video details from structured data, video sitemaps and Open Graph tags.

What VideoObject markup do I need?

Three properties are required: name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate (in ISO 8601 format, like 2026-10-01). Google Search Central

Google also recommends description, duration, contentUrl (the video file itself) and embedUrl (the player). Fill in description with the plain-English summary you'd want an AI to repeat.

To point Google at the best parts of a long video, there are two ways to mark up key moments:

MarkupWhat you give GoogleLanguages
ClipThe exact start and end time and a label for each partEvery language Google Search supports
SeekToActionHow timestamps appear in your video URLs, so Google can find moments itself12 languages

If you'd rather use a sitemap, a video sitemap needs a thumbnail, title, description (up to 2,048 characters) and the video or player URL. Google Search Central

What should I do on YouTube itself?

Three things: write a real description, add chapters and check your captions.

Write the description for search

YouTube says keywords in your description "can help viewers find your videos more easily through search," and that the first few lines matter most because viewers see them first. YouTube Help Open with one sentence that says what the video answers, in the words a customer would use.

Add chapters

Put timestamps in the description. YouTube's rules: the first one must be 00:00, list at least three in order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. YouTube Help Automatic chapters are on by default, but chapters you write replace them, and you choose the labels.

This helps Google too. Google says that for videos on YouTube, "you can specify the exact timestamps and labels in the video description" to feed its key moments. Google Search Central Label chapters like questions: "How long does a roof replacement take?" beats "Part 3."

Fix your captions

YouTube writes captions automatically, but it warns: "You should always review automatic captions and edit any parts that haven't been properly transcribed." YouTube Help Speech recognition often mangles business names, product names and street names, which are exactly the words you want AI to get right. You can also upload your own caption file. YouTube Help

Should I allow third-party AI training on my YouTube videos?

That's a separate choice from being cited, and it's off unless you turn it on. YouTube says: "By default, the third-party training setting is turned off." YouTube Help

If you turn it on, you can allow selected companies or all of them. It's in YouTube Studio under Settings, Channel, Advanced settings, and changes can take up to 7 days to show. YouTube Help YouTube also says it "isn't facilitating payments" between AI companies and creators. YouTube Help

When it launched in December 2024, the list included Amazon, Anthropic, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, Perplexity and xAI, among others. TechCrunch YouTube's help pages don't list the companies, so check the current list in Studio.

This setting is about training future models. It isn't the same as whether an AI search answer links to your video today.

Do other people's videos about me matter?

They seem to. Ahrefs looked at 75,000 brands and found that how often a brand is mentioned on YouTube had the strongest link to AI visibility of anything it measured, a correlation of about 0.737. Ahrefs

Ahrefs is careful to say "correlation isn't causation." Brands that are popular get more videos and more AI mentions for the same reason. Still, it's a good sign that being talked about on YouTube, in reviews, tutorials and comparisons, goes along with being named by AI.

For a local business, that can be as simple as a customer walkthrough, a supplier's case study, or a local news segment that says your name clearly and spells it right in the description.

How do I check whether AI cites my videos?

Ask Google the questions your videos answer, and look at the sources listed under the AI Overview or in AI Mode. Note whether it's your video, your page, or someone else's. Try the same question in Copilot and Gemini.

To check many questions across engines at once, our Prompt Simulator runs one question across 12 engines and highlights where you're cited. How AI Overviews choose their sources explains the Google side in more depth.
