How to get your pages cited in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google has written down what it takes. It is shorter than most guides make it sound. Here is Google's own list, plus how to check each point on your site.
Google says there are no extra requirements to be cited in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in normal Google Search. You don't need special AI files or markup. Then answer the question clearly, cover the follow-up questions people ask next, and keep your structured data (hidden code that states facts about the page) and Business Profile accurate.
What does Google say it takes to be cited in AI Overviews?
Google's page for site owners is short and direct. Three lines from it matter most. Google Search Central
- "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode."
- To be eligible, a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet."
- "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features."
So the first question is not "how do I optimize for AI?" It is "can Google show this page, with a snippet, today?" (A snippet is the short preview text under a search result.) If the answer is no, nothing else on this list helps.
How do I check a page is eligible to be cited?
Do these three checks for the page you want cited. They take about five minutes.
- Is it indexed? In Google Search Console, paste the page's address into the search bar at the top (URL Inspection). It should say the URL is on Google.
- Is a snippet allowed? Open the page's code and search for
nosnippetandmax-snippet. Google lists these controls as ways to limit what shows in its AI features, so a stray one can keep you out. Google Search Central - Can Google reach it? Google says to make sure pages meet its technical requirements so it can "find them, crawl them, index them." A page blocked in robots.txt, or behind a login, fails this. Google Search Central Blog
Why do pages that don't rank #1 still get cited?
Because an AI Overview is not built from one search. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use a 'query fan-out' technique — issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources" to build a response. Google Search Central
In plain words: when someone asks one question, Google also looks up the smaller questions behind it. That is what "query fan-out" means. A page that answers one of those smaller questions well can be linked, even if it is not the top result for the big question.
That changes how you plan pages. Instead of one giant guide, write clear answers to the follow-up questions your customers ask. "How much does it cost?" "How long does it take?" "Do I need a permit?" Each one is a chance to be the linked source.
How do I get my pages cited in Google AI Overviews, step by step?
Steps 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8 come from Google's own advice for its AI search features. Google Search Central Blog Steps 3 and 4 are our practice, based on how Google says query fan-out works.
- Pass the eligibility check above. Indexed, snippet allowed, reachable.
- Write for people, with something only you can say. Google: "Focus on your visitors and provide them with unique, satisfying content." Your own prices, your own process, your own photos and numbers beat a rewrite of what everyone else says.
- Answer the question in the first lines. Then give the detail. A clear answer near the top is easier to lift as a supporting link.
- Cover the follow-up questions. Use them as headings, each with a short, direct answer under it.
- Make structured data match the page. Google's heading for this advice is "Make sure structured data matches the visible content." (Structured data is hidden code that tells search engines facts about the page.)
- Add real images and video. Google says to "support your textual content with high-quality images and videos on your pages."
- Keep your Business Profile up to date. In the same post Google says to "ensure that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date." (Merchant Center is Google's tool for product listings; your Business Profile is your listing on Google Maps.) For a local business, we treat this as a must.
- Give a good page experience. Google warns that even good content disappoints on a page that is "cluttered, difficult to navigate."
Is getting cited in AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
Google covers both on the same page with the same rules. Both need an indexed, snippet-eligible page, and both may use query fan-out. Google Search Central
The practical difference is the question. AI Mode invites longer, conversational questions. In our own Search Console (read 25 Sep 2026), full-sentence questions such as "how do i get my pages cited in google ai overviews?" show up in the query list. Search Console does not say whether they came from AI Mode. In our view, pages that answer that kind of full question, in its own words, have a better shot.
How do I know if Google is citing my site?
Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type. Google Search Central
In our own Search Console on 25 Sep 2026 we also saw a separate Generative AI features report, marked beta, that counts impressions by page. It is reached from a link on the Performance report. If yours has it, it is the most direct view of which of your pages Google's AI features show.
Google adds that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are "higher quality," with visitors "more likely to spend more time on the site." Google Search Central Blog So judge the work on leads and time on site, not only on click counts.
