What is DuckDuckGo Search Assist?

Search Assist is DuckDuckGo's AI answer at the top of search results. DuckDuckGo says it works like this: "we scan the web for relevant content and use AI-powered natural language technology to generate a brief answer based on the information found." DuckDuckGo Help

On citations, it is strict: answers "always link directly to one or two sources, citing where the answer came from." Google or ChatGPT may list many links. Search Assist names a single winner, or two.

Users choose how often Search Assist appears. The settings are Often, Sometimes (the default), On-demand and Never, and there's an Assist button to ask for an answer on any search. Some people turn AI off completely at noai.duckduckgo.com. DuckDuckGo Help

The feature launched as DuckAssist in March 2023, mostly using Wikipedia. DuckDuckGo It now draws from "across the web." DuckDuckGo

Which DuckDuckGo crawlers should I allow?

DuckDuckGo runs two crawlers with different jobs:

Two details make DuckAssistBot an easy yes for most businesses:

• It doesn't feed training. DuckDuckGo says the data it collects "is not used in any way to train AI models."
• Blocking it has no ranking side effect. DuckDuckGo says blocking it "does not impact organic search rankings." It only removes your pages from AI answers. The change takes about 72 hours.

So if you want to be cited, keep it allowed. If you'd rather stay out of AI answers, you can block it without losing your normal listing.

Where do DuckDuckGo's local business results come from?

From Apple Maps. DuckDuckGo moved its map and address searches to Apple's MapKit JS in 2019, including searches for a local business, a type of business, and places nearby. DuckDuckGo

So the fix for your DuckDuckGo map listing lives at Apple. Since April 2026 that's Apple Business at business.apple.com, which replaced Apple Business Connect and moved existing listings over. It's free. Apple Apple asks businesses to "keep your location data up to date" there. Apple Support

DuckDuckGo hasn't said whether Search Assist reads Apple Maps data when it writes an answer. But the same Apple listing also feeds Siri and Apple Maps, so it's worth doing anyway. Our Siri guide covers it in detail.

How do I become one of the one or two sources?

With only one or two links per answer, Search Assist rewards the page that answers the exact question most clearly. DuckDuckGo hasn't published what it prefers. When it launched, it chose Wikipedia because of its "transparent editorial process that cites all the sources used." DuckDuckGo That's a useful model: plain facts, stated clearly, backed by sources.

1. Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first sentence under each heading.
2. One question per section. Headings phrased like real questions ("How much does a roof inspection cost in Denver?") match how people search.
3. Make facts stand alone. "Open 7am–7pm Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday" works when quoted with nothing around it.
4. Show your sources. Link the license, the manufacturer spec or the study behind a claim.
5. Keep text in the HTML. A live crawler reading a page mid-answer won't wait long for JavaScript.
6. Date what changes. Prices, hours and offers should say when they were last checked.

What about Duck.ai?

Duck.ai is DuckDuckGo's private AI chat. It offers models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral and others, and DuckDuckGo says it doesn't store prompts or train on them. Chats are saved on your device, not on DuckDuckGo's servers. DuckDuckGo Help

For a business, Duck.ai matters less than Search Assist. DuckDuckGo's help page doesn't describe how Duck.ai searches the web, so the dependable route is the one above: be crawlable by DuckAssistBot and be the clearest answer. What each underlying model already learned about you comes from the wider web, which is why the same facts need to match everywhere.

Search your customers' questions at duckduckgo.com. If no answer appears, press Assist to ask for one, then look at the one or two sources it links. Note whether it's your site, a directory, or a competitor. Search your business name on the Maps tab to check your Apple listing.
