How to show up in Meta AI
Meta AI lives inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. It answers from web pages and from public posts on Meta's apps. Here is what Meta says about both, and the one crawler most sites forget to allow.
Meta AI answers from the web and from public posts, Reels and Groups on Meta's apps. For the web, Meta says allowing its Meta-WebIndexer crawler "helps us cite and link to your content." Allow it in robots.txt, keep your pages easy to quote, and post publicly on Facebook and Instagram about what you do and where.
Where does Meta AI get its answers?
From two places.
- The web. Meta runs a crawler, Meta-WebIndexer, that it says "navigates the web to improve Meta AI search result quality." Meta for Developers
- Public content on Meta's apps. When Meta launched its Muse Spark model in April 2026, it said answers would get "Reels, photos, and posts woven directly into your answers, with credit back to the content creators." It also said Meta AI surfaces local posts and context when people look up places. Meta
In June 2026 Facebook added AI Mode, with "answers grounded in what people are saying publicly across our apps like in Groups and Reels." Meta
Meta AI runs on Muse Spark across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, its AI glasses, the Meta AI app and the website. Meta So a customer can ask for a recommendation in the middle of a WhatsApp chat, without ever opening a search engine.
Which Meta crawlers should I allow in robots.txt?
Meta lists five crawlers. Only one is about being cited: Meta for Developers

Meta's own advice is direct: "Allowing Meta-WebIndexer in your robots.txt file helps us cite and link to your content in Meta AI's responses."
That gives you a clean split. You can block meta-externalagent to keep your pages out of training, and still allow meta-webindexer to be cited. Meta says robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to apply.
Do my Facebook and Instagram posts help me show up in Meta AI?
They can. Meta says it pulls public posts, Reels and Groups discussion into answers, with credit to the people who posted them. Meta hasn't said that the fields on a Facebook Page, like hours or category, are read into Meta AI answers, so treat your posts, not your profile settings, as the part that counts.
Four things are worth doing:
- Post publicly. Meta AI can only draw on public content. Posts limited to friends or followers don't help here.
- Say what and where. A Reel titled "How we fix a leaking flat roof in Tampa" is findable. A post that only says "Busy day!" isn't.
- Answer real questions. Posts that answer what customers ask, such as prices, timelines or how to choose, are the kind of thing an answer can use.
- Show up in local Groups honestly. Meta AI Mode grounds answers in Groups. Helpful answers in community groups, under your real business name, are part of what it reads. Spam and fake reviews are not, and they break Meta's rules.
