Do I need a GEO agency or GEO software? Decide in five minutes.

GEO software shows you where AI search leaves you out and helps you fix it. A GEO agency does the fixing for you. Which one you need comes down to money, time and skill.

Who wrote this: AI Syndicate sells both GEO software and done-for-you GEO work, so we gain either way you decide. This page is our own guide, published on our own site. Where we name other companies' prices, they come from those companies' own websites, read on 24 September 2026.

Quick answer

Choose GEO software if you have someone who can edit your website a few hours a month and your budget is in the hundreds of dollars. Choose a GEO agency if nobody has the time or skill, or if AI search is a big source of revenue for you. Many businesses start with software and add people later.

What is the difference between a GEO agency and GEO software?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of getting your business found, trusted and quoted by AI search — ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and others.

  • GEO software asks those engines your customers' questions, records whether you're named, checks whether your site is easy for AI to read, and tells you what to change. The better tools hand you the fix itself — the code or the copy — not just a warning.
  • A GEO agency is a team that does the work: rewriting pages, adding schema (hidden labels that tell machines what a page is about), fixing listings, building proof on other sites, and reporting back.

The software finds and suggests. The agency finds and ships. Somebody has to ship.

How do I decide between an agency and software?

Find the row that sounds most like you.

Your situationBudgetTime you can giveSkill in-houseBest fit
Solo owner, small site, comfortable editing itUnder a few hundred dollars a month2–4 hours a monthCan edit pages and paste codeSoftware
Small team with a marketer or web personHundreds a monthA few hours a weekMarketer who can publishSoftware
Growing team, several locations or marketsThousands a monthSome, but not enoughCan ship if someone guides the planSoftware plus an account manager
Busy firm, AI search matters to revenueTens of thousands per engagementVery littleNone to spareAgency (done-for-you)
Enterprise with its own web teamVariesPlentyStrongSoftware, often with an enterprise contract

If you land between two rows, start with the cheaper one. You can add people later; it's harder to justify an agency before you know where you stand.

When is GEO software enough?

Software is enough when all three of these are true:

  1. Someone can make changes to your site. Most fixes are small: a clearer first paragraph, a missing FAQ, a schema block, unblocking an AI crawler in robots.txt (the file that tells crawlers what they may read).
  2. They have a few hours a month. Checking results, making the top fixes, re-checking.
  3. You're willing to learn a little. Good software explains why each fix matters.

For example, a dentist in Tampa with a simple website and an office manager who updates it could run a $99/month tool, make the three or four fixes it ranks highest, and re-check a week later. Guides like our GEO audit checklist cover the basics for free.

When is a GEO agency worth the money?

An agency earns its fee when:

  • Nobody has time. The software's fix list keeps growing and nothing ships.
  • The work is bigger than fixes. New pages, content in your voice, getting mentioned on other trusted sites, cleaning up listings across many locations.
  • The stakes are high. One new client is worth thousands — a law firm, a brokerage, a high-end clinic — so being the name AI recommends pays back fast.
  • You compete hard in your area and want someone watching rivals every week.

Ask any agency three things: what they will ship each month, how they measure it, and whether they'll show you results measured the same way before and after. If they can't show their own site doing well in AI answers, ask why.

What does each option cost?

Agency pricing across the market is rarely published, so compare what each one will actually deliver, not just the monthly number. We've written more on what GEO costs in 2026.

Can I use both GEO software and an agency?

Yes, and that's often the best route. The software keeps score; the people do the work. It also keeps an agency honest, because you can see the same numbers they see.

At AI Syndicate the platform is the same at every level. You can start on a self-serve plan, add an account manager with AI Managed, or hand the whole job to our team with AI Command — without switching tools. Not sure where you fit? A free audit shows where you stand today.

FAQ

Common questions

Is GEO software cheaper than a GEO agency?

Usually. Published software plans start from $29/month, while our own done-for-you service starts at $25,000; most agencies don't publish prices. The hidden cost of software is the staff time it takes to make the fixes.

Can I do GEO myself?

Yes, if someone can edit your website and give it a few hours a month. Software tells you what to change; you make the changes.

How long does GEO take to show results?

It depends on the engine and on how much needs fixing. Measure first, so you can see what moved after each change.

Does AI Syndicate offer both?

Yes. Self-serve plans run $99–$999/month, AI Managed adds an account manager, and AI Command is our done-for-you service from $25,000.
