What is an AI citation?
The plain-English definition, what counts as one, and what makes an AI engine pick one source over another.
An AI citation is when an AI answer names or links a source for what it says. In ChatGPT search, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews, that is usually a numbered link or a source card beside the answer. A mention is weaker: the AI names your business but links somewhere else, or nowhere.
What counts as an AI citation?
Three things get called a citation, and they are worth keeping apart:
| Type | What you see | How strong |
|---|---|---|
| Linked citation | A numbered link or source card that opens your page | Strongest — the engine is pointing readers to you |
| Named mention | The answer names your business, but links elsewhere or nowhere | Useful, but you don't own the click |
| Recommendation | The answer lists you as an option when someone asks for one | What most local businesses care about |
When we measure AI visibility for a business, we count all three, per engine, per question.
Where do AI citations appear?
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode show supporting links next to the summary. Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet — there are no extra requirements. Google Search Central
- ChatGPT search shows sources beside its answers. OpenAI says sites that block its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI
- Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot can show sources too, in their own layouts.
The pattern is the same across all of them: the engine can only cite a page it was allowed to read and could find.
How does a site earn AI citations?
There is no form to fill in and no one to email. What moves the needle in our experience, in the order we check it:
- Let the crawlers in. If robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, you are out of ChatGPT search answers by OpenAI's own rule. See which AI crawlers to allow.
- Answer the question in the first lines of the page. Engines lift short, direct statements. A page that makes you scroll for the answer loses to one that doesn't.
- Say something only you can say. A dated number, a named result, a real example. If ten sites say the same thing, the engine has no reason to pick yours.
- Be backed up elsewhere. Engines trust a fact more when other sites repeat it — reviews, directories, press, industry lists.

Common questions
Is an AI citation the same as a backlink?
No. A backlink is a link from one website to another. An AI citation is a link or name inside an AI answer. They are related — pages other sites link to are easier for engines to find and trust — but you can have one without the other.
Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT or Google's AI answers?
Not in the organic answer. Citations there come from what the engine found and trusted.
How do I know if AI engines cite my site?
Ask them the questions your customers ask, on each engine, and record who gets named and linked. Doing that by hand gets slow fast; our free check runs it for you.
