What is AI share of voice?

The plain-English definition, how the number is worked out, and how to measure it without fooling yourself.

Quick answer

AI share of voice is the share of AI answers that name or cite your brand, out of a fixed set of questions your buyers ask, compared with your competitors. For example, if ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers name you in 12 of 40 answers, your share is 30%. It is the main scoreboard for GEO.

How is AI share of voice calculated?

The idea is simple. You ask AI engines the same set of questions, many times, and count who gets named.

  1. Pick the questions. Write down what your buyers actually type — "best estate lawyer in Tampa", "is [your brand] worth it". This list is called a prompt set.
  2. Pick the engines. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot — wherever your buyers ask.
  3. Run every question on every engine. Save each answer word for word.
  4. Count. For each brand, count the answers that name or cite it. Divide by the total number of answers.

Here is a made-up example for four dentists in one town, across 40 answers:

BrandAnswers naming itShare of voice
Dentist A1640%
Dentist B1230%
Dentist C410%
Dentist D00%

The shares don't have to add up to 100%. Some answers name three brands; some name none. The answers that name no one are unclaimed — in our experience often the easiest ground to win.

Why does share of voice matter more than rankings in AI search?

A Google results page lists ten links. In our experience, an AI answer often names a handful of options, or just one. If you are not in the answer, there is no page two to fall back on.

Clicks are scarce too. In a 2025 Pew Research Center study of 900 U.S. adults' real Google searches, people clicked a link inside the AI summary on just 1% of visits to pages that had one. So most of the value is in being named in the text — which is exactly what share of voice counts, and what click-based traffic reports miss.

How do I measure AI share of voice reliably?

  • Keep the prompt set fixed. Changing the questions changes the score. Add new questions as a separate list.
  • Repeat runs. In our experience the same question can get different answers from one day to the next, so one run is a sample, not a score.
  • Split by engine. You can lead in Perplexity and be missing from ChatGPT. The average hides that.
  • Count citations and mentions apart. A linked AI citation is stronger than a named mention with no link.

Doing this by hand gets slow fast. AI Syndicate's Competitors board, included on every plan, measures share of voice from real AI answers for up to 25 rivals, and shows the unclaimed share too.

FAQ

Common questions

Is AI share of voice the same as citation share?

They are close cousins. Citation share usually counts how often a brand is named or cited across engines for a set of prompts; share of voice puts that number next to each competitor's so you can see who leads.

How many questions do I need to track?

Enough to cover how buyers really ask — the service, the town, comparisons, and your brand name. For a local business that is often a few dozen questions; a national brand needs more.

Can I see AI share of voice in Google Search Console?

No. Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted inside the normal Web search results in Search Console, not broken out, and clicks are not the same as being named. Google Search Central
