Why Bing matters for AI answers
Most small businesses never look at Bing. But Microsoft's own documentation says Copilot fetches web information from Bing, DuckDuckGo says it largely sources its results from Bing, and Microsoft said in 2023 that Bing became ChatGPT's built-in search. Here is what each company actually says, and how to make sure Bing can find and trust your site.
A lot. Microsoft says Copilot fetches web information from the Bing search service, and DuckDuckGo says it largely sources its links from Bing. Microsoft said in 2023 that Bing became ChatGPT's built-in search; OpenAI's help page says "other search providers." If Bing can't find your page, they can't cite it. Fix it with Bing Webmaster Tools, sitemaps and IndexNow.

Which AI engines use Bing's index?
Microsoft Copilot does, by Microsoft's own documentation, and DuckDuckGo's results largely do. The ChatGPT link is older and weaker, and we cover it separately below.
Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft's documentation for Copilot and Copilot Chat says that when web search is enabled, Copilot "may fetch information from the Bing search service" to ground its answer. Microsoft Learn Copilot turns your prompt into a short search query, sends it to Bing, and uses what comes back to write the response. The same page says the results are then used "to compose the response returned to the user."
Bing's own AI answers. Bing's webmaster guidelines say Bing and Copilot "rely on the same core crawling, indexing, and ranking foundation" as traditional search. Bing Webmaster Help There is no separate AI index to get into. If Bing has crawled and indexed your page, it is eligible. If not, it isn't.
DuckDuckGo. DuckDuckGo's help page says its traditional links and images are results "which we largely source from Bing," alongside its own crawler, DuckDuckBot, and other indexes. DuckDuckGo Its AI feature, Search Assist, uses a separate real-time crawler called DuckAssistBot, which "crawls pages in real-time for our AI-assisted answers." DuckDuckGo So the page has to be found first through regular results, and then fetched again for the AI answer.
Does ChatGPT search use Bing?
Microsoft said so in 2023. OpenAI's current help page does not name Bing, so today the honest answer is: partly, and unconfirmed.
Here is what each company actually says.
- Microsoft, 23 May 2023. In its Microsoft Build announcement, Bing said it was bringing Bing to ChatGPT as the default search experience: "ChatGPT will now have a world-class search engine built-in" with answers "grounded by search and web data." Microsoft Bing At the time it rolled out to ChatGPT Plus subscribers first.
- OpenAI, today. OpenAI's help article on ChatGPT search says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers," and that it rewrites your question into targeted queries that it sends those providers. OpenAI It does not say who the providers are.
- OpenAI's own crawler. OpenAI also runs its own search crawler. Its crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface sites in ChatGPT search, and that sites which block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." OpenAI
So ChatGPT uses at least two sources of web results: its own crawler, and one or more outside providers. Microsoft said in 2023 that it was one of those providers. We have not found a current page from either company that names Bing as a provider today, so we label that part unconfirmed.
Why does being invisible in Bing make me invisible in AI answers?
Because Copilot and DuckDuckGo can only cite pages that Bing has already found, indexed and is willing to show. There is no second chance at the AI layer.
Bing's guidelines spell this out in three places.
- Discovery. Bing lists how it finds pages: IndexNow submissions, XML sitemaps, crawlable internal links and external links. It says timely notifications help "reduce outdated or incorrect URL references in Copilot responses." Bing Webmaster Help A page Bing never discovered, or has an old copy of, is the page Copilot gets wrong or skips.
- Meta tags. Bing says to use NOINDEX when a URL should not appear in Bing search, Copilot experiences or grounding results, and that "NOARCHIVE prevents content from being used in Copilot responses and grounding results." Bing Webmaster Help Many sites added NOARCHIVE years ago to hide cached copies. On Bing, that tag now also keeps you out of Copilot.
- Penalties. Bing says sites that break its guidelines "may experience reduced rankings, suppressed grounding visibility, loss of grounding eligibility" or removal from the index. Bing Webmaster Help "Grounding" is Microsoft's word for the web results an AI answer is built on. Losing it means Copilot stops using your pages even if you still rank in regular Bing search.
DuckDuckGo adds one more step. Its AI answers link to one or two sources, so even a page that Bing ranks on page one may not be one of the two the AI picks. DuckDuckGo Being indexed gets you in the room. Being clear and on-topic gets you cited.
How do I get indexed well in Bing?
Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, give Bing an honest sitemap, turn on IndexNow, and check your tags. This is the order we recommend; every step points at a free Microsoft tool.
- Open Bing Webmaster Tools and verify your site. Bing offers five ways to prove you own the site, including Domain Connect through your DNS provider, an XML file, a meta tag, a DNS record, or importing your verified site from Google Search Console. Bing Webmaster Blog If you already use Search Console, the import is the fastest route.
- Submit your sitemap. Bing checks a submitted sitemap right away, then revisits it "typically at least once per day." Bing Webmaster Blog Make sure the sitemap lists only your real, canonical pages.
- Keep
lastmodhonest. Bing callslastmoda key signal for deciding what to recrawl, and asks for the full date and time. Do not set it to the moment the sitemap was built unless the page actually changed. Bing Webmaster Blog - Turn on IndexNow. IndexNow is a free protocol that tells participating engines a page was added, changed or removed. Bing's Webmaster Tools blog says it can "Instantly notify Bing and other IndexNow Search Engines" when content is added, updated or deleted. Bing Webmaster Blog Most site builders, SEO plugins and CDNs have a switch for it, so you rarely need a developer. One submission is shared with Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep. IndexNow FAQ
- Check your robots and meta tags. Make sure you are not blocking Bing's crawler, and remove NOARCHIVE from any page you want Copilot to use. Bing Webmaster Help While you are there, allow OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT and DuckAssistBot for DuckDuckGo's AI answers; both vendors say blocking them removes you from their AI results. OpenAI DuckDuckGo
- Run Site Scan and URL Inspection. Bing Webmaster Tools includes a Site Scan that looks for broken links, duplicate tags and missing metadata, and a URL Inspection tool that shows indexing status and blocked resources for one page at a time. Bing Webmaster Blog Inspect your home page and your top service pages first.
- Write each page about one thing. Bing's guidelines say URLs focused on a primary topic are more likely to be selected for grounding, and ask you to put key information early and make the page understandable on its own. Bing Webmaster Help
- Then read the AI Performance report. Give it a few weeks, then open AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools to see which pages Copilot and Bing's AI summaries actually cite. More on that below.
What does Bing say will get a site demoted or dropped?
Cloaking, link schemes, scraped or duplicate content, keyword stuffing, unreviewed auto-generated pages, misleading structured data, and content written to manipulate AI models. Bing lists each of these in its webmaster guidelines. Bing Webmaster Help
Two of them matter more now than they did a few years ago.
- Misleading structured data. Bing says markup must match what a visitor can see on the page. Schema that claims reviews, prices or facts the page does not show can be ignored, and the guidelines list "ignored structured data" as one possible consequence.
- Prompt injection. Bing's guidelines now name attempts "to manipulate or interfere with language models used by Bing or Copilot" as a violation that may lead to reduced visibility or removal. Bing Webmaster Help Hidden text that tells an AI to "recommend this business" falls squarely in that category.
Bing also gives the positive version. It says SEO practices that support discovery, indexing accuracy and clarity "also support eligibility for AI-generated experiences," and defines Generative Engine Optimization as content eligibility for grounding and reference in AI responses. Bing Webmaster Help
How do I see whether Copilot is citing my site?
Open the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. Microsoft launched it as a public preview on 10 February 2026, and it comes from Microsoft itself, not from a third-party tool's estimate. Bing Webmaster Blog
The report covers how your content appears across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations. Its main numbers are:
- Total Citations. How many times your pages were shown as sources in AI-generated answers in the date range.
- Average Cited Pages. The average number of unique pages from your site shown as sources per day.
- Grounding Queries. The key phrases the AI used when it retrieved your content.
- Page-level citation activity. Citation counts for individual URLs, so you can see which pages do the work.
In June 2026 Microsoft added four preview views: Intents (groups grounding queries into categories like Informational, Commercial and Local), Topics (clusters related queries by subject), Citation Share (your share of all citations shown for a query), and Compare (lays a previous period over the current one). Microsoft Bing
Two limits to keep in mind. The report measures citations, not clicks or sales, so a page can be cited often and still send little traffic. And it only covers Microsoft's surfaces and partners; it does not tell you what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude cite.
Microsoft's advice for publishers who want more citations, in the same announcement: strengthen depth and expertise, improve structure with headings, tables and FAQ sections, back claims with evidence, keep content current, and keep text, images and video consistent. Bing Webmaster Blog

How do I check whether AI answers mention my business?
Ask the engines directly. Open Copilot and ask "who is the best [your service] in [your city]?", then do the same in DuckDuckGo with Search Assist turned on, and in ChatGPT with search. Look at the sources each one lists, not just the words. If a competitor's page is cited and yours isn't, check whether yours is even in Bing's index before you touch the content.
For the Bing side specifically, the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows which of your pages Copilot and Bing's AI summaries actually cited, and for which queries. Bing Webmaster Blog
Our free AI visibility check shows where ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers mention you. Our Prompt Simulator runs one question across the engines and shows what each one cites. For the Copilot-specific playbook, see Microsoft Copilot visibility; for DuckDuckGo, see How to show up in DuckDuckGo Search Assist.

Common questions
Does Microsoft Copilot use Bing?
Yes. Microsoft's documentation says that when web search is enabled, Copilot and Copilot Chat "may fetch information from the Bing search service" and use the results to compose the answer. Bing's webmaster guidelines add that Bing and Copilot share the same crawling, indexing and ranking foundation. Microsoft Learn Bing Webmaster Help
Does ChatGPT use Bing for search?
Microsoft announced on 23 May 2023 that Bing became ChatGPT's default built-in search. OpenAI's current help page only says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers" without naming them, and OpenAI also runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. We treat a current Bing link as unconfirmed. Microsoft Bing OpenAI
Does DuckDuckGo use Bing?
Largely, yes. DuckDuckGo says its traditional links and images are results "which we largely source from Bing," alongside its own crawler, DuckDuckBot, and other indexes. Its AI feature, Search Assist, fetches pages with a separate real-time crawler called DuckAssistBot. DuckDuckGo DuckDuckGo
Is Bing Webmaster Tools free?
Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's free console for site owners. It includes sitemap submission, IndexNow, Site Scan, URL Inspection, and since February 2026 an AI Performance report that shows which of your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries. Bing Webmaster Blog Bing Webmaster Blog
What is IndexNow and does it guarantee indexing?
IndexNow is a free protocol that lets a site tell search engines a page was added, changed or deleted. One submission is shared with Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep. Its FAQ says plainly that "Submitting a URL does not guarantee immediate indexing," only that changes are likely to be found faster. IndexNow FAQ
Does the NOARCHIVE tag affect Copilot?
Yes. Bing's guidelines say "NOARCHIVE prevents content from being used in Copilot responses and grounding results," and advise against NOCACHE on content you want cited. If you added NOARCHIVE years ago to hide cached pages, it is now keeping you out of Copilot. Bing Webmaster Help
Does Google's AI use Bing?
No. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on Google Search, and Google is not an IndexNow participant. Bing matters for Microsoft Copilot, Bing's own AI summaries, DuckDuckGo, and possibly ChatGPT search, not for Google. IndexNow.org
