How to show up in Google AI Mode

AI Mode is Google's chat-style search. You ask a full question, it runs many searches for you, and it writes one answer with links. Here is what Google itself says about getting your pages into those links, how to check whether you are there, and a checklist to work through.

Quick answer

Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in normal Google Search. No special files or schema are needed. AI Mode splits each question into many smaller searches, so cover the follow-up questions your customers ask, on clear pages Google can crawl.

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a separate, chat-style way to search Google. Google calls it its "most powerful AI search experience." You ask anything, get an AI-written answer, and can keep asking follow-up questions. The answer comes with "helpful links to the web." Google Search Help

People can reach it three ways, according to Google: go to google.com/ai, type a question on google.com and tap AI Mode, or tap AI Mode on the Google app's home screen. They can ask with text, voice, images, PDFs and other files, or paste a web address and ask about that page. Google Search Help

Google started testing AI Mode in Search Labs in early 2025, and on May 20, 2025 began rolling it out in the U.S. with no Labs sign-up. Google said it was bringing "a custom version of Gemini 2.5" into Search for AI Mode and AI Overviews at the time. Google Today Google's help page also lists a "Pro" option that uses Gemini 3 Pro, and a "Fast" model for most questions. Google Search Help

Why a business owner should care: people use AI Mode for the questions that used to take several searches, like comparing options. Google says it's "particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed." Google Search Central "Which roofer near me is best for a metal roof?" is exactly that kind of question.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews is the AI summary that sometimes appears at the top of normal Google results. Google says it shows only when its systems decide it adds something, "and as such, often don't trigger." AI Mode is a whole conversation you choose to start. Google Search Central

Google also says the two "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary." Google Search Central So being cited in one doesn't mean you're cited in the other. Check both.

The rules for being linked are the same for both, and we cover them step by step in How to get cited in Google AI Overviews. For the signals behind which pages get picked, see How AI Overviews choose their sources.

What does Google say site owners should do for AI Mode?

Google's guide "AI features and your website" is the official answer. Its main line: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Google Search Central

What it takes to be eligible. "To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." Google adds that meeting every rule still doesn't guarantee it will show your page.

What you don't need. "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add."

What Google lists as still worth doing:

  • Allow crawling in robots.txt, and in your CDN or hosting setup
  • Link to important pages from other pages on your site
  • Give visitors a good page experience
  • Put important content in text, not only in images or video
  • Add good images and videos where they help
  • Make sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page
  • Keep your Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date

In a May 2025 post on succeeding in AI search, Google's John Mueller added that people in these experiences are "asking longer and more specific questions," and told site owners to focus on "unique, non-commodity content." Google Search Central Blog

What is query fan-out, and why does it matter for my business?

Query fan-out is how AI Mode searches. Google's help page says it divides "your question into subtopics and searching for each one simultaneously across multiple data sources," then brings the results together into one answer. Google Search Help When it launched AI Mode, Google described it as "issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf." Google

Google says this lets it show "a wider and more diverse set of helpful links" than a classic search. Google Search Central

Here is what that means in practice. Someone asks: "I need a plumber in Tampa for a tankless water heater, what should it cost and who's good?" Google doesn't publish the exact searches it runs. But a question like that clearly has parts: who installs tankless heaters in Tampa, what installation costs, which brands are worth it, what reviews say. Each part is a chance for a different page to be linked.

Our advice: write down the five to ten questions a customer asks before buying from you. Make sure each one is answered clearly on your site, in its own section or page, in the customer's own words. A site that answers only "who we are" can be found by only one of those smaller searches.

Can I stop Google AI Mode from using my content?

You can limit it, but there's a trade-off. Google says that to limit what it shows from your pages in Search, including in AI features, you use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. Google Search Central Mueller's post warns: "More restrictive permissions will limit how your content is featured in our AI experiences." Google Search Central Blog

A common mix-up is Google-Extended. Google says it limits AI training and grounding "in some of Google's other systems." For Search, Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the control, because AI "is built into Search." Google Search Central Blocking Google-Extended is not described as a way to leave AI Mode.

Check this if you're missing: a stray nosnippet or a very small max-snippet value, often added by a plugin or a past developer, can keep a page out of AI Mode while it still ranks normally.

Where is Google AI Mode available?

Google keeps the official list on its help page, and it changes, so check it there rather than trusting any article (this one included). When we read it on 6 Oct 2026, it listed more than 200 countries and territories, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, India and Australia, and close to 100 languages. Google Search Help

A few details from the same page:

  • Pro model. Gemini 3 Pro in AI Mode is available in English, in the countries Google lists, and you must be signed in to a personal Google Account.
  • History. People get the best experience with search history turned on; without it, AI Mode still works but can't pick up past conversations.
  • Labs. Some newer AI Mode features are tested first in Search Labs. Google says Search Console doesn't include data from Search Labs experiments. Google Search Console Help

If you serve customers in more than one language, write your key pages in each language your customers search in.

How do I check whether my business shows up in AI Mode?

Use two checks: ask AI Mode yourself, and read your Search Console data.

1. Ask it. Open google.com/ai and type the full questions your customers would ask, including your city. Then ask a follow-up, like "which of these is best for a small office?" Look at the links and business names it shows. Try the same questions in a private browser window and on your phone, because answers vary.

2. Read Search Console. Google says sites in AI Mode are counted in the Performance report under the "Web" search type. Google Search Central The Search Console help page explains the rules:

  • Clicking a link to your page in AI Mode counts as a click.
  • Position follows the same rules as a normal results page.
  • A follow-up question is "essentially performing a new query," so its impressions and clicks are counted under that new question.

Google Search Console Help

Google's guide describes AI Mode data as part of the overall Web totals. So look for long, full-sentence questions in the Queries list. Those are a hint of AI-style searching, not proof. We describe a separate beta report we've seen in our own account in How to get cited in Google AI Overviews.

3. Judge visits by what they do. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are "higher quality," meaning people spend more time on the site, and suggests tracking sales, signups and other conversions, not only clicks. Google Search Central

Will the same work help me on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot?

Mostly, yes. The basics Google asks for (pages crawlers can reach, clear text answers, accurate business facts) are what the other engines need too. The main extra step is letting each engine's own crawler in.

  • ChatGPT. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features." Allow it in robots.txt if you want to appear there. OpenAI
  • Perplexity. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity." Perplexity
  • Microsoft Copilot. Bing says that for AI-powered search, freshness signals "directly influence how quickly updates are reflected in search results and AI generated answers," and asks for a complete sitemap with accurate lastmod dates. Bing Webmaster Blog
  • Gemini. Google's Gemini app is a separate product from AI Mode. See How to get recommended by Gemini.
