Should you show your prices to AI?
People now ask AI assistants "how much does this cost?" before they ever call you. The engine answers from whatever it can find and read. Here is what the AI companies say about how they look up prices, how to mark prices up, and how to publish a price even when every job is different.
Yes, in most cases. Claude's documentation says it searches the web for "current prices." ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot also answer from web results. If your price isn't on a page they can read, they quote someone else's. Publish real prices, or starting-at prices and ranges if every quote differs, and keep them dated and consistent.

How do AI engines answer "how much does it cost?"
They search the web, read what they find, and write an answer with links. A price question is exactly the kind of question that sends them searching.
Claude. Anthropic's web search documentation lists when Claude searches. One of the listed cases is "Current prices, rates, scores, or statistics." Each search result also comes with a page_age field, "When the site was last updated," and the answer carries citations to the pages it used. Anthropic
ChatGPT. OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot crawler is used "to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features." Sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." OpenAI
Perplexity. Perplexity's crawler, PerplexityBot, is there to "surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity." Perplexity
Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. Google's developer docs say grounding Gemini in Google Search lets it answer about recent topics and "Reduce model hallucinations by basing responses on real-world information." Google For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says there are "no additional requirements" beyond normal Search, and asks owners to keep their Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date. Google
Microsoft Copilot. When web search is on, Copilot "may fetch information from the Bing search service" to give "a better, more grounded response." Microsoft
What happens if my prices aren't on my website?
The engine still answers. It just uses other sources: a competitor's price page, a directory listing, a cost guide written by someone who has never seen your work, or an old review that mentions what someone paid years ago. None of the AI companies promise to skip a price question because your site is silent.
That creates three common problems:
- A wrong number with your name on it. The engine reads a third-party page and repeats its figure as if it were yours. See what to do when AI gets your business wrong.
- A competitor's number instead. The answer quotes a rival who did publish a price, and links to them.
- "Call for a quote." The answer tells the person they'll have to contact businesses to find out. That's a reason to ask the next question, which may name someone else.
What if every job is priced differently?
Publish a starting price or a range, and explain what moves it. This is our advice; it's what most service businesses can do even when no two jobs are the same.
- "Starting at" prices. "Drain cleaning starts at $149." A floor price answers the most common question honestly.
- Typical ranges. "Most kitchen repaints cost $2,500 to $4,500." Schema.org has a place for exactly this:
minPrice("The lowest price if the price is a range") andmaxPrice. Schema.org - What changes the price. List the three to five things that push a job up or down: size, materials, access, urgency, location. This is the sentence an AI engine can quote to explain why the range is wide.
- Worked examples. "A 2,000 sq ft single-story home, two colors: about $3,800 in 2026." A concrete example is easier to quote than a vague promise.
- What's included. Say what the price covers and what costs extra, so the number can't be misread as all-in.
Some industries have rules about this. In the US, the FTC's Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees, effective May 12, 2025, requires businesses selling live-event tickets or short-term lodging to "tell people upfront the total price." FTC If you're in one of those industries, your published price must be the total, fees included. Check the rules that apply to your own trade before you publish.
How do I mark up prices so AI engines can read them?
Put the price in plain text on the page first. Then add structured data that says the same thing. For the basics, see schema markup for AI search.
Local and service businesses. Google's LocalBusiness markup has a priceRange property: "commonly specified by either a numerical range (for example, \"$10-15\") or a normalized number of currency signs (for example, \"$$$\")." Keep it under 100 characters, or Google won't show it. Google A real range like "$149-$450" tells an engine more than "$$".
Products. On product markup, price is required on each Offer, and Google recommends priceCurrency. When a product has several prices, AggregateOffer uses lowPrice and highPrice. If you add priceValidUntil, keep it in the future: Google says the snippet "may not display" if that date has passed. Google
Online stores selling in ChatGPT. OpenAI's product feed spec makes price a required field, written like "79.99 USD," and says to "update the feed when a sale starts or ends." OpenAI Feeds are a bigger topic, covered in how to get your products into AI shopping.
Match the page. Google's structured data rules say "Don't mark up content that is not visible to readers of the page" and that markup "must be a true representation of the page content." Google Never put a price in your markup that isn't on the page.
Where else do my prices need to match?
Everywhere an AI engine might read them. Engines pull from many sources, so a price that differs between your site, your Business Profile and a directory gives them three answers to pick from.
- Google Business Profile. You can add "price and description" to each service. Google asks you not to put prices in custom service names, so keep the price in the price field. Google See Google Business Profile for AI search.
- Merchant Center and product feeds. Google's AI features guide asks owners to keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date. Google
- Directories and marketplaces. Yelp, Angi, Houzz, Thumbtack, booking sites: whatever price they show should match yours.
- Old pages and PDFs. Find old price sheets, blog posts and promotions that quote last year's prices. Update them, or say clearly that they're out of date.
How do I publish prices AI engines will quote correctly?
This is our advice, built on the sourced facts above.
- Make one price page. One URL, like
/pricing/or/prices/, with every service and its price or range. Don't hide it behind a form. - Write prices as text. Not inside an image or a PDF only. A sentence like "Gutter cleaning: $129 to $249 for most homes" is easy for any engine to quote.
- Give a starting price or range when you can't give an exact one. Then list what changes it.
- Say what's included and what isn't. Fees, travel, materials, taxes.
- Date it. Add a visible "Prices updated October 2026" line. Claude sees
page_age, so a clearly current page beats an undated one. - Mark it up.
priceRangeon your business markup,OfferorAggregateOfferon products, matching the visible text. - Copy the same prices everywhere. Business Profile services, feeds, directories.
- Update the day prices change. Change the page, the markup and the date together.

How do I check what AI says my prices are?
Ask the engines the way a customer would: "How much does [your service] cost in [your city]?" and "How much does [your business name] charge for [service]?" Look at the number in each answer and the link next to it. If the source isn't your site, that's the page to fix or the listing to correct.
Our Prompt Simulator runs one question across 12 engines at once and shows which sources each one cites. To keep your price page current, see does AI prefer fresh content?

Common questions
Does ChatGPT read the prices on my website?
It can, if its search crawler can reach the page. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and sites that block it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Prices written as text on an open page are the easiest to quote. OpenAI
Does Claude look up current prices?
Yes. Anthropic's web search documentation lists "Current prices, rates, scores, or statistics" among the cases where Claude searches, and each result includes a page_age showing when the site was last updated. Anthropic
What should I put in priceRange?
Google accepts a numeric range like "$10-15" or currency signs like "$$$", under 100 characters. Our advice: use a real range, such as "$149-$450", because it tells an engine more than dollar signs do. Google
Can I put prices in my schema but not on the page?
No. Google's structured data guidelines say "Don't mark up content that is not visible to readers of the page," and that markup must be a true representation of the page content. Google
Can I add prices to my Google Business Profile?
Yes. Google lets you add a price and description to each service. It asks you not to include prices in custom service names. Google
