Do you need to rank on Google to get cited by AI?

For twenty years, page one of Google was the goal. AI answers pick their sources differently, and the gap is growing. Here is how many AI citations come from Google's top 10, why that number halved in a year, how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot compare, and what still matters about ranking.

Quick answer

Less than it used to. Ahrefs found 76% of Google AI Overview citations came from the top 10 in July 2025, and only 38% a year later, because Google now answers from many related searches at once. For ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, about 8% of cited pages rank top 10. Being indexed still matters; page one does not.

How many AI Overview citations come from Google's top 10?

About four in ten, down from three in four a year earlier. Both numbers come from Ahrefs, an SEO software company, not from Google.

July 2025. Ahrefs studied 1.9 million citations from 1 million AI Overviews. 76.10% of cited pages ranked in Google's top 10 for the same search, 9.50% ranked between 11 and 100, and 14.40% ranked below 100. The median cited page ranked third; the first-cited page had a median rank of second. Ahrefs

One year later. Ahrefs repeated the study with 863,000 searches and 4 million AI Overview URLs, more than double the first sample. Only 37.9% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10. The rest split almost evenly: 31.2% ranked 11–100 and 31.0% ranked below 100. Among the cited pages that did not rank in the top 100, 18.2% were YouTube URLs. Ahrefs

Ranking still helps. In a separate analysis, Ahrefs measured a correlation of 0.347 between ranking in the top 10 and being among the top three AI Overview citations, and 0.445 between organic position and how prominently a cited page appeared. Even so, pages ranking first were in the top three citations only about half the time. Ahrefs

Why are AI Overviews citing fewer top-10 pages?

Because Google's AI no longer answers from one search. It answers from many.

Google calls the technique query fan-out. For AI Mode, Google says the system breaks a question into subtopics and issues "a multitude of queries simultaneously" on the user's behalf, which lets it go deeper into the web than a single traditional search. Its Deep Search feature takes the same idea further and can issue hundreds of searches for one report. Google

Ahrefs' explanation for the drop is the same: AI Overviews now rely less on the results for the exact keyword and more on the pages that show up for the related sub-queries. Ahrefs A page that ranks 40th for "roof replacement Tampa" can still be first for "how long does a metal roof last in Florida humidity", and that second search may be one of the queries Google runs behind the scenes.

What this means: the unit you compete on is no longer one keyword. It is every specific question a customer's question can be broken into.

Do ChatGPT and Perplexity cite pages that rank on Google?

Mostly not. Ahrefs took 15,000 long-tail questions from its Brand Radar dataset, searched each on Google and Bing, and asked the same questions to the AI assistants. Ahrefs

  • ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot: only about 8% of cited URLs ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt, and more than 80% of their citations came from pages that did not rank for that query at all.
  • Perplexity: 28.6% of cited URLs were in Google's top 10, the closest to Google of the four.
  • Bing: overlap with Bing's top 10 averaged about 10%. Copilot, which is built by Microsoft, overlapped most.

It is not just that ChatGPT asks different questions. When Ahrefs looked at 118,931 of the sub-queries ChatGPT actually sent to search, only 6.82% of ChatGPT's chosen results were in Google's top 10 for those same sub-queries, and 83.39% did not appear in Google's results at all. Ahrefs Ahrefs' reading is that ChatGPT applies its own selection layer on top of whatever index it searches. Ahrefs

OpenAI says only that ChatGPT search ranks results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed. OpenAI For how Bing feeds several engines, see Why Bing matters for AI answers.

What about Google ranking still matters for AI?

Being in the index, and being strong in Search overall.

Indexing is the gate. Google says that to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, meeting Search's technical requirements. There are no additional requirements, no special file and no special structured data. Google A page that is not indexed cannot be cited at any rank.

AI runs on Search's systems. Google's guide says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. Google The same quality signals that rank a page also decide whether it is worth quoting.

Popular sites get named more. Across 77 million AI Overviews and roughly 957,000 ChatGPT and 954,000 Perplexity prompts, Ahrefs found that the top 50 sites mentioned by each system were also the ones with more organic search traffic. For AI Overviews, the Spearman correlation was 0.47. Ahrefs

Other engines need their own access. OpenAI says sites that block its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI Ranking on Google does nothing if ChatGPT's crawler is turned away.

How do I get cited by AI if I don't rank on page one?

This is our advice, built on the studies above and what Google and OpenAI publish. The goal is to be the best answer to the specific sub-questions behind a customer's question, on a page every engine can reach.

  1. Make sure you are indexed. Check Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. A page that is not indexed is not eligible for AI Overviews at any rank.
  2. Let the AI crawlers in. Allow OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Bingbot in robots.txt and in your firewall. See Which AI crawlers should you allow?.
  3. Break your main question into its parts. For "best roofer in Tampa", the sub-questions are things like cost per square, metal vs shingle in humidity, permits in Hillsborough County, and hurricane-rated warranties. List them.
  4. Answer each part on its own. One heading per sub-question, answered in the first sentence, with the specific number, rule or step. Google's fan-out and ChatGPT's own searches are looking for exactly these.
  5. Be specific where competitors are vague. The page ranking first for the broad keyword often stays general. A page that answers the narrow question better can be cited from position 40.
  6. Use video. 18.2% of AI Overview citations from outside the top 100 were YouTube URLs. A short answer video for each common question is a second way in. See How to get your videos cited by AI.
  7. Keep doing ordinary SEO. Rank still correlates with citation, and traffic correlates with mentions. AI visibility builds on Search; it does not replace it.

How do I see which pages AI cites instead of mine?

Ask the engines your customers' questions and compare the cited pages with Google's results for the same words. If the cited pages do not rank on page one either, you are competing on sub-questions, not on the keyword.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to rank on page one of Google to appear in AI Overviews?

No, though it helps. Ahrefs found 76% of AI Overview citations came from the top 10 in July 2025 and 37.9% in its 2026 update, with 31.0% coming from pages ranking below 100. Google's requirement is that a page is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Ahrefs Google

Why did AI Overviews start citing fewer top-ranking pages?

Ahrefs attributes it to query fan-out: Google's AI splits a question into related sub-queries and cites pages that do well across those, not only the results for the original keyword. Google describes AI Mode as issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously across subtopics. Ahrefs Google

Does ChatGPT use Google's search results?

Its picks rarely match them. In Ahrefs' study of 118,931 sub-queries ChatGPT sent to search, only 6.82% of its chosen results were in Google's top 10 for the same sub-query and 83.39% were not in Google's results at all. OpenAI does not publish which index ChatGPT search uses. Ahrefs

Which AI engine is closest to Google's rankings?

Perplexity, in Ahrefs' test of 15,000 long-tail queries: 28.6% of its cited URLs ranked in Google's top 10, against about 8% for ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Against Bing, Copilot overlapped most. Ahrefs

Is SEO still worth doing for AI visibility?

Yes. Google says its AI features run on its core Search ranking and quality systems. Ahrefs measured a 0.347 correlation between top-10 rank and top-three AI Overview citation, and a 0.47 correlation between organic traffic and AI Overview mentions for the most-mentioned sites. Google Ahrefs

Can a page that doesn't rank at all get cited by AI?

Yes. In Ahrefs' 2026 data, 31.0% of AI Overview citations ranked below position 100 for the keyword, and 18.2% of those were YouTube URLs. For ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, more than 80% of citations came from pages that did not rank for the query. Ahrefs Ahrefs
