Why does ChatGPT give a different answer every time?

Ask ChatGPT the same question twice and you can get two different lists of businesses. That isn't a bug. Here are the five reasons AI answers change, straight from the AI companies' own documentation, and how to measure your brand when no single answer can be trusted on its own.

Quick answer

Five things change AI answers. Models pick words with built-in randomness. Engines that search the web see different results each day. Memory and location shape answers for each person. Companies update models often. And each engine uses different models and sources. So one screenshot proves little. Ask the same question several times, across engines, and track how often you're named.

What are the key facts about why AI answers change?

Why does the same question get a different answer?

Because AI models don't look up a fixed answer. They write a reply one small piece of text at a time, and at each step they choose from several likely next words. A setting called temperature decides how adventurous that choice is.

Anthropic, the company behind Claude, explains it plainly: temperature "controls the randomness of a model's predictions." Higher settings give "more creative and diverse outputs," lower settings give answers that "stick to the most probable phrasing." Anthropic

Here's the part most people don't expect. Even at the lowest setting, answers can still change. Anthropic says that even with temperature set to 0, "the results will not be fully deterministic and identical inputs may produce different outputs across API calls." Anthropic

OpenAI says the same thing in its own way. Its API lets developers set temperature "between 0 and 2," where 0.8 "will make the output more random" and 0.2 more "focused and deterministic." It also offers a seed setting to try to repeat an answer, but warns: "Determinism is not guaranteed." OpenAI

What this means in plain words: if the AI is torn between recommending you and a competitor, a re-roll can flip it. Being named once doesn't mean you're always named. Being left out once doesn't mean you're never named.

Yes. Most AI assistants now search the web before answering questions about businesses, and the web they search is different every day.

ChatGPT. OpenAI says ChatGPT "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information." It "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" for its search partners, and after reading the first results it may send "additional, more specific queries." OpenAI Small changes in those rewritten searches can bring back different pages, and different pages mean different businesses in the answer.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says both "may use a 'query fan-out' technique," running "multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources." Google

Microsoft Copilot. Copilot "generates a search query that it sends to the Bing search service," and that query "is different from the user's original prompt." Microsoft

Perplexity and Grok. Perplexity says it searches "the internet in real-time." Perplexity xAI's docs say Grok's web search tool lets it "search the web in real-time and browse web pages." xAI

So when a new review site publishes a list, a competitor updates a page, or a search index refreshes, the answer can change even if the AI model itself didn't.

Does ChatGPT give different answers to different people?

Yes. Your answer and your customer's answer can differ because the assistants know different things about each of you.

Location. ChatGPT "may use an approximate location based on your IP address to provide relevant local results." OpenAI's example: if you ask for "good restaurants near me" from the San Francisco area, ChatGPT may search for "top restaurants San Francisco." OpenAI also notes that a VPN can change the location it guesses. OpenAI

ChatGPT memory. With Memory on, ChatGPT "can remember relevant preferences and details" from past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, files and connected apps. OpenAI says memory can personalize web searches too: "location or dietary preferences can help refine a restaurant search." OpenAI

Gemini. Google's Gemini app can personalize answers based on "the memory of your past Gemini chats," your activity in connected Google apps, and your own instructions. Google says these features "are not available to everyone at this time." Google

Claude. Anthropic says Claude's memory is "on by default for Free, Pro, and Max plans" and saves topics "as you chat." Paid users can also have Claude search their past chats. Anthropic

Why this matters to you: the business owner who checks ChatGPT at their desk has years of chats about their own company. Their customer doesn't. If you want to see what a stranger sees, use ChatGPT's temporary chat and pick "Unpersonalized," which OpenAI says won't use existing memories or custom instructions. OpenAI Claude's version is an incognito chat. Anthropic

Do AI model updates change the answers?

Yes, and they happen more often than most people realise.

OpenAI's Model Release Notes for ChatGPT list a steady run of changes in 2026 alone. For example, on May 28, 2026 OpenAI updated GPT-5.5 Instant "to improve response style and quality," and announced it was retiring older models. In March 2026 it retired the GPT-5.1 models and moved existing conversations onto newer ones. OpenAI

The model can even change in the middle of a busy day. OpenAI says GPT-5.4 mini is used "as a fallback for GPT-5.4 Thinking when rate limits are reached." OpenAI The same person, asking the same question, may be answered by a different model.

Developers see this too. OpenAI tells them to watch a system_fingerprint value "to monitor changes in the backend." OpenAI

What this means for your brand: a drop in mentions the week after a model update may say more about the model than about your website. That's one reason to watch trends over weeks, not days.

Why do ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity disagree?

Because they're different products built on different models, searching different indexes.

  • ChatGPT sends rewritten searches to partner search providers. OpenAI
  • Copilot grounds its answers with the Bing search service. Microsoft
  • Google says even its own two AI answers differ: "AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary." Google
  • Perplexity lets paid users choose among models from other companies, and its default "Best" option picks "the most suitable model for your question." Perplexity
  • Grok has its own real-time web search tool. xAI

The same is true for Claude, Meta AI, DeepSeek, Mistral and the rest. Each one reads the web its own way. A business that shows up everywhere usually has strong, consistent information spread across many sources, not just one.

Why does one screenshot prove nothing?

Put the five reasons together and a single screenshot of an AI answer is one roll of the dice, from one person, in one place, on one model, on one day.

That cuts both ways:

  • A good screenshot can mislead you. Your own ChatGPT may name you because it remembers your chats about your business. A customer's ChatGPT has no such memory.
  • A bad screenshot can scare you for nothing. A customer sends you an answer that names three competitors. Ask again and you might be in it. Or you might not. One answer can't tell you which.
  • An agency's "proof" screenshot can be cherry-picked. If someone shows you a single answer naming their client, ask how many times they asked and how often the client appeared.
Our advice: never make a decision from one AI answer. Not a budget change, not a panic, not a celebration.

How do I measure my brand if AI answers keep changing?

Count how often you're named across many answers, not whether you were named in one. This is our advice; no AI company publishes a standard for it.

  1. Write down 10 to 30 real questions your customers ask, like "best [your service] in [your city]" or "[your brand] vs [competitor]."
  2. Ask each one several times. Start a fresh chat each time. In ChatGPT, use a temporary, unpersonalized chat so your own memory doesn't skew it.
  3. Ask across engines. At least ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. Add Grok, Meta AI or DeepSeek if your buyers use them.
  4. Record a simple yes or no for each answer: were you named? Were you cited with a link? Who else was named?
  5. Turn it into a share. Divide answers that named you by total answers. That's your AI share of voice. Do the same for each competitor.
  6. Repeat on a schedule and watch the trend line, not any single day.

How often should I check what AI says about my business?

This is our advice. None of the AI companies say how often their answers change, so set your schedule by how much is at stake.

SituationHow oftenWhy
Most small businessesMonthlyEnough runs to see a trend without chasing noise
Busy, competitive marketsWeeklyCompetitors and review sites change faster
After you change your site or listingsWeekly for the next monthSo you can see whether the change helped
After a big model updateRe-check that weekRelease notes show models change often; separate model shifts from your own changes
Any single day's resultDon't react aloneOne day is one sample

Whatever schedule you pick, keep the questions the same each time. If you change the questions, you can't compare this month with last month.

FAQ

Common questions

Why does ChatGPT give a different answer when I regenerate?

Because AI models choose each word with some built-in randomness, controlled by a setting called temperature. Anthropic says even at temperature 0, "identical inputs may produce different outputs," and OpenAI says "Determinism is not guaranteed." Anthropic OpenAI

Does ChatGPT show different businesses to different people?

It can. ChatGPT uses an approximate location from your IP address for local results, and with Memory on it may use details like where you live to refine its searches. OpenAI OpenAI

How do I see what ChatGPT says to someone who isn't me?

Start a temporary chat and choose "Unpersonalized." OpenAI says this won't use your existing memories, custom instructions or plugins, and temporary chats don't create memories. Results can still vary with location and randomness. OpenAI

Why do Google AI Overviews and AI Mode show different answers?

Google says they "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary." Both may run several related searches behind the scenes. Google

How many times should I ask an AI the same question?

Our advice: more than once, in fresh chats, and on more than one engine. Then record how often you were named out of the total answers. That share, tracked over weeks, tells you far more than any single answer.
