How personal injury lawyers get recommended by AI

After a crash, a lot of people now ask an AI assistant what to do before they call anyone. Here is what the AI companies say about where their answers come from, what our October 2026 study found about injury lawyers in particular, and what a personal injury firm can change this month.

Quick answer

AI assistants search the web and recommend the injury lawyers that other sites already vouch for: legal directories, review sites, and the firm's own Google Business Profile. In our October 2026 study, Justia, Super Lawyers and Avvo were the most-cited sites for personal injury lawyers. Your own site still matters most for answering the questions an injured person asks.

Do injured people really ask AI for a lawyer?

They ask AI about their injury far more often than they ask it to pick a lawyer. The difference matters for where a firm puts its effort.

Asking for legal help is common. In a survey by the transcription company Rev, 65% of 1,002 US adults said they had already turned to an AI chatbot for legal help. The survey ran December 2–3, 2025. Rev

Hiring through AI is still rare. AttorneySync's 2026 consumer report followed 320 people looking for personal injury representation. 13.0% named an AI tool such as ChatGPT as a starting point for their legal research, while "less than 2% report they would use AI to find or hire a lawyer." AttorneySync

Researching attorneys is growing. A July 2026 press release from the agency iLawyer Marketing reported that 50.1% of 1,110 US consumers would use at least one AI answer engine to research attorneys. It was published as a press release and gives no fielding dates, so treat it as a signal, not a census. AB Newswire via Wedbush

All three are surveys run by companies that sell to law firms or to the public, and they measure different things. Read together, they point the same way: AI is where an injured person learns what is happening to them, and often where they first hear a firm's name.

What this means in plain words: the firm that answers "how long do I have to file?" well is the firm the person already trusts when they search for a lawyer.

Where do AI assistants find personal injury lawyers?

Mostly on sites other than the firm's own. In October 2026 we asked 12 AI assistants for the best local businesses in 600 markets, including personal injury lawyers in 30 metros across Florida, California, New York and Texas, and recorded every site they cited. AI Syndicate

  • Legal directories lead. For personal injury lawyers, the most-cited site was Justia, with 5.9% of all citations in the trade, followed by Super Lawyers and Avvo.
  • The firm's own site is a small share. Across every trade we studied, 54% of citations went to about 280 review sites, directories and lists that recur from city to city. Only 11% went to websites we could identify as a ranked business's own.
  • The #1 changes. Injury lawyer markets kept the same #1 from September to October in 50% of the 12 or 13 markets we could compare, a small group, so read it as a hint. In a typical October market, 7.8 of the 12 assistants named the #1 firm.

The engines describe the same habit in their own documents. ChatGPT "can also use location information to find local results" and may use "trusted third-party providers" for nearby business listings. OpenAI Claude searches when a question needs "Information about specific organizations, people, or products that might have changed," and "Citations are always enabled for web search." Anthropic

The directories each work differently, and some of them you can't buy your way into. See which legal directories AI cites for injury lawyers. Each city's current AI ranking is in AI Local.

What does an injury firm's Google Business Profile need?

A real name, the right profile type, and a steady stream of honest reviews. Google says "Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity," and that "More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking." Google Google's guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode also asks owners to keep Business Profile information up to date. Google

Use the firm's real name. "Your name should reflect your business's real-world name," and adding extra words "could result in the suspension of your Business Profile." Google "Smith Law" is a name. "Smith Law Car Accident Lawyer Houston" is keyword stuffing.

Firm profile and lawyer profiles. Google counts lawyers as "individual practitioners," and their profiles "may include title or degree certification (for example Dr., MD, JD, Esq., CFA)." When several lawyers work at one office, the firm gets its own profile for that location, separate from the lawyers'. A practitioner "shouldn't have multiple Business Profiles to cover all of their specializations." Google

Categories. Pick categories that finish the sentence "This business IS a," and choose "the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business." Google

Reviews. Ask every client you helped, and never write or buy one. For what the FTC allows and how each engine reads reviews, see do reviews affect AI recommendations? Your state bar may have its own rules on testimonials; the bar rules post covers the main ones.

What should an injury firm's website say so AI can quote it?

The answers to the questions an injured person asks before they call, written for your state and your cities. These are the pages we see AI assistants pull a sentence from.

How long do I have? Deadlines differ by state, and an engine needs a page that says yours plainly. Texas, California and Florida generally give two years for a negligence injury claim; New York gives three. Texas, California, Florida, New York Florida shortened its negligence deadline in 2023 with HB 837, which is exactly the kind of change old pages get wrong. Florida Senate

What if it was partly my fault? Explain your state's rule. In Florida, since March 24, 2023, a person found "greater than 50 percent at fault for his or her own harm may not recover any damages," except in medical negligence cases. Florida Senate

What does a lawyer cost? Say how your contingency fee works, in numbers. Under ABA Model Rule 1.5(c), a contingent fee agreement "shall be in a writing signed by the client" and must state "the percentage or percentages" the lawyer takes. ABA If you publish what you charge and who pays case costs, an engine can quote you instead of a generic guide. See should you show your prices to AI?

One page per injury and per place. A car accident page, a truck accident page, a slip-and-fall page; a page for each city you actually serve, with your office address. A page about everything is hard to cite for anything.

Lawyer bios with proof. Bar admissions, years practicing, cases tried, and results with the context your state bar requires. Google's rater guidelines treat topics that can affect people's "financial stability, or safety" as "Your Money or Your Life," and tell raters to look for reputation information on "professionals such as lawyers." Google

Date every page. Add a visible "Reviewed by [lawyer], October 2026" line, and change it when the law changes.

Which schema markup should a law firm use?

Use LegalService for the firm, and Person for each lawyer. Schema.org defines LegalService as "a business that provides legally-oriented services, advice and representation, e.g. law firms." The older Attorney type is marked: "This type is deprecated - LegalService is more inclusive and less ambiguous." Schema.org, Schema.org

Three properties do most of the work for an injury firm:

  • areaServed: "The geographic area where a service or offered item is provided." List the cities and counties you take cases in. Schema.org
  • knowsAbout: a topic that is known about, "suggesting possible expertise but not implying it." On each lawyer: car accidents, truck accidents, wrongful death. Schema.org
  • sameAs: links to the firm's Justia, Avvo, Super Lawyers and Business Profile pages, so an engine can tie the listings to the firm.

Keep the markup true to the page. For the basics, see schema markup for AI search.

Which AI crawlers should a law firm let in?

At least the search crawlers, because blocking them removes the firm from those answers.

  • ChatGPT. "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." GPTBot, the training crawler, is separate. OpenAI
  • Claude. Blocking Claude-SearchBot "may reduce your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results." ClaudeBot is the training crawler. Anthropic
  • Perplexity. "PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity," and "It is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models." Perplexity
  • Google. AI Overviews and AI Mode use normal Search: "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." Google

Whether to allow the training crawlers is a separate business choice. OpenAI and Anthropic list their training crawlers separately from their search crawlers, and it is the search crawlers their documents tie to search answers. More in AI crawlers and robots.txt.

How does an injury firm get recommended by AI, step by step?

This is our advice, built on the sourced facts above.

  1. Check what the engines say today. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini for "best car accident lawyer in [your city]" and note every site they cite.
  2. Fix the Business Profile. Real name, one firm profile per office, practitioner profiles for lawyers who want them, the fewest accurate categories.
  3. Claim the legal directories. Justia, Avvo and the others the engines cited for your city, with the same name, address and phone everywhere.
  4. Write the pre-call pages. Deadlines, fault rules, fees and what happens next, for your state, each reviewed and dated by a lawyer.
  5. Build one page per injury type and per city served. Each with real local facts, not swapped city names.
  6. Mark up the firm and the lawyers. LegalService with areaServed, Person with knowsAbout, sameAs to each listing.
  7. Let the search crawlers in. OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot.
  8. Ask every satisfied client for a review. On Google and the directories your engines cite, within your bar's rules.
  9. Re-check monthly. In half of the injury lawyer markets we compared, the #1 changed within a month.

How do I check whether AI recommends my firm?

Ask the way a client would, in your city: "Who is the best car accident lawyer in [city]?", "Do I need a lawyer after a truck accident in [state]?" and "Is [your firm name] any good?" Note who is named, and which site each name is cited from. If a directory keeps coming up and you aren't on it, that is the listing to fix first.
